BACKGROUND: The Chapel Hill Orange County Visitors Bureau Advisory Board is charged with developing and coordinating visitor services in Orange County. It also implements marketing programs that will enhance economic activity and quality of life in the community. The Board of County Commissioners appoints all seventeen (17) members, with representation from specific entities and fields. Thank you and please let us know if we can provide any additional information: Town of Chapel Hill: Council woman Paris Miller-Foushee has been proposed for consideration by the Town of Chapel Hill Board. Ms. Miller will replace Karen Stegman. Town of Carrboro: Council woman Ms. Randee Haven O'Donnel has been proposed for consideration by Town of Carrboro Board. Ms. Haven O'Donnel will replace Damien Seils. Hillsborough Commissioner Matt Hughes has been proposed by the Town of Hillsborough Commissioners. Mr. Hughes will replace Mark Bell. The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough has nominated Mr. Steve Peck to replace Beverly Scarlett whose term has expired on that board. Mr. Peck has a long history serving on historic and cultural boards in Hillsborough. The Chapel Hill/Carrboro Chamber of Commerce has nominated Donald, D.R. Bryan to replace Manish Atma who cannot serve a second term due to travel constraints as explained in his resignation letter to BOCC in December. Mr. Bryan is a developer(Southern Village) and majority owner of Hyatt Place Hotel Southern Village. Ms.Jeri Lynn Schulke has been appointed Executive Director of the Downtown Chapel Hill Partnership. She replaces Rebecca Mormino and, as a result, is recommended to serve on the Visitors Bureau Board. Finally, Ms. Wendy Smith has been recommended to serve on behalf of the O.C.Arts Commission. Ms. Smith will replace Jenny Schultz-Thomas who resigned in October 2023. All nominees will make wonderful contributions to Orange County's tourism goals. I received my BA in Art History and from there I grew a career that was rooted in supporting artists and encouraging the community to embrace creative lifestyles both through the art of creating and the appreciation of the arts. From 1991 until 2018, 1 managed and then owned Cameron s, a gift gallery dedicated to the art of uplifting spirits and inspiring creativity. After retiring from retail (sort of!) I found a home in the non-profit world when I took a job with The Scrap Exchange as their Development and Finance Director. From here, I continued my non-profit journey by joining the staff of The ArtsCenter as their Development Director. Throughout my career, building community and inspiring creativity, have been the overarching goals upon which I built my success. These goals should also be the marks of success for any OCAC board member. Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board The relationship that The ArtsCenter holds with the Orange County Arts Commission is one of the most powerful tools for advancing the interests of artists in Orange County. By working in partnership, The ArtsCenter and OCAC can ensure that artists needs, concerns, hopes and dreams are heard and acted upon. While it may be possible for both organizations to function outside of this partnership, the community is made stronger through this collaboration and artists benefit greatly. How would your particpation on this board contribute to the diversity of viewpoints? 12 Page 2 of 2 Wendy Smith At my core, I am a business person and approach my job with that mindset. I believe all business must have a mission to follow in order to be successful. The non-profit model appeals to me because of the focus on mission. However, at the end of the day, I will look at the bottom line to ensure profitability and success. This viewpoint is an asset to the commission. This board must have creative visionaries as well as members who consider the bottom line and financial health of the organization. My skill set actually offers both. My business mind offers a very functional and important viewpoint. Chapel Hill Orange County Visitors Bureau Advisory Board Please explain how your background, education and experience is relevant to this board As a native to Orange County, I have witnessed first hand the value that the towns assets offer to the tourism sector. Each town, Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Hillborough has its unique character and offers visitors to our county a wide range of experiences. As a former business owner, I know firsthand, the impact tourism has on our local economy. My business was one that locals often brought their out-of-town guest to visit. Through these visits, my staff and I would often learn of other popular attractions. Consequently, we became experts in recommending other points of interests to guests. I appreciate the impact that tourism has on our local economy and believe the messaging and services that the Visitors Bureau provides is crucial to the success of our local businesses. Now that I work for The ArtsCenter, I have a unique understanding of the our local business landscape having been part of the for-profit sector and now the non-profit sector. Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board I believe that no business should live in a bubble. The key to success is to ensure your business is an active part of the greater community. I would like to bring both the perspective of The ArtsCenter and greater arts community to this board. I will gain valuable insight from fellow board members that I can then bring back to The ArtsCenter. Building community builds better businesses and drives more robust economic growth. As mentioned before, my unique background, including both for-profit and non-profit experiences would offer a diverse viewpoint. Also, as a local, I have a good understanding of the town and gown relationship. Understanding how the businesses and the university both offer value and interest to our visitors is important when allocating funds for marketing. I excel at seeing the forest for the trees which is crucial when balancing promotions for three towns, multiple business districts, the university and many outlying attractions.
