BACKGROUND: The Department of Social Services has had a embed with UNC Hospitals continuously since 1977 to provide Social Services staff at the hospital. These staff members, income maintenance caseworkers, allow patients at the hospital to apply for Medicaid while at the hospital. There are currently Iwo staff members at the hospital although the hospital has indicated that a third may be needed at the new facility that serves women and children. The Social Services Board has reviewed this contad and recommends that it be continued. FINANCIAL IMPACT: The hospital reimburses Me County for the nonfedarel share of these positions, so there are no County costs.
