General Public Comments on Items Not on Agenda (3-minute limit): none because there are no members of the public in attendance. Monthly Meeting Attendance Record (confirm completion): confirmed through approval of meeting minutes - COMPLETED. New Business: Elliot Cramer's Proposed Gift—Friends of OCAS. • Discussion of ways to used proposed new gift to OCAS: 1. Enrichment walk for dogs; could include agility course, scent course. 2. Invest in Dogs Playing for Life: a well-established program in shelters throughout the U.S.; could pay to have them come to OCAS and train everyone, this is every intellectually stimulating for the dogs, enables dogs to interact with other dogs, provides a lot of information about individual dogs,would be able to invite staff from other shelters as well. 3. Dog training in(new) home so dogs can stick to their families. 4. Wellness check vouchers for people to use for their pets. 5. Training on how to prep house for new pet and maybe training on what to expect (like when puppies hit adolescence). 6. It was noted that an enrichment walks as a permanent addition to OCAS would benefit the entire community. 7. It was suggested that maybe the NC Botanical Garden might help with a scent garden for the dogs. Dr. Pickett will follow up with Friends of OCAS with these ideas. It was noted that OCAS already has a veterinary assistance program, but it is currently inactive due to lack of funds. It is also not traditionally been used for routine care. 2 of 4 Internal Another idea was to try and get DEGA in Orange County—DEGA provides vet care to pets of people who are homeless or have very low incomes. Information Items: Holly Pittman,Administrative Support II, gave a presentation on the many disparate things she does for OCAS. Current Vacancies: There is one at-large position open, no applicants. Animal Services Advisory Board: vote on pending candidate: Cathy Munnier's short term ended; vote needed to reappoint. This will be her first full term appointment. OCAS still has a contract with SNAP, but patients would have to drive to Wake County to use because the new partner is not servicing this area. • OCAS is almost fully staffed—there is one Office Assistant position open, and interviews are ongoing. • Board of Commissioners Strategic Planning session Thursday (Orange County)—will include results from the community strategy survey that was sent out a few months ago. Dr. Strong can report back on this at the next meeting.
