PURPOSE: To consider appointments to the Southern Orange Senior Center Design Committee.
BACKGROUND:
Charge:
The Committee will assist designers in interpreting the needs assessment information that will be
presented and approved by the Board of County Commissioners prior to the commencement of the
design process. The Committee will assist as may be needed in public information initiatives that may
occur during the design/construction process; and it will recommend the final plan for the Southern
Orange Senior Center to the County Commissioners for approval prior to bidding of the project. In
addition, the Committee will assist in planning an event celebrating the opening of the Center in 2006..
A subgroup of the Committee will participate in the architect selection process.
Timeline: The Southern Orange Senior Center Design Committee will be engaged in the project at
various times throughout the project, pursuant to the scope of work outlined in the charge.
Composition:
The composition of the Design Committee was approved by the BOCC as follows on December 9, 2003,
as outlined below, Also, the Chair of the Advisory Board on Aging appointed a Special Committee to
review all the applicants for the Design Committee. The Special Board Committee was composed of the
leadership of the Aging Board (Chair, Vice-Chair, past-Chair) and long-time board member
representative, Mariah McPherson. Please see attached letter for the Special Committee's
recommendations.

Subject: Recommendation for Appointments to the Southern Orange Senior Center Design Committee
As Chair of the Orange County Advisory Board on Aging I appointed a special committee to review all the applicants for
the Southern Orange Senior Center Design Committee. The Special Board Committee was composed of the leadership of
the Aging Board (Chair, Vice-Chair, past-Chair) and long time board member representative Mariah McPherson.
We met with the Department on Aging staff this week to consider all applicants and to review their current involvement
with senior activities and their past work, volunteer and educational experiences,
After discussion of the design committee's composition and interested applicants that would best fit its composition and
help achieve a good senior center design, the Advisory Board on Aging's Special Committee recommend to the
Commissioners the following applicant appointments:

Subject: Recommendation for a LTNC Health Caze Appointrnent to Senior Center Design Committee
At the Orange County Advisory Boazd on Aging's January 14a' meeting we reviewed the Board of County
Commissioners' decision to appointment a fifteen member design committee to plan for the new Southern
Orange Senior Center.
After discussion of the design committee's composition, the Orange County Advisory Board on Aging voted
to recommend the Commissioners the appointment of a tJNC Health Caze representative in one of the four
at- lazge positions. The primary reasons given was LTNC Hospitals current support the center's Wellness
Program and the importance of maintaining their partnership in the development of the new senior center
as a "Wellness Center."
We have talked to Eric Munson, Chief Operating Officer, at UNC Hospitals and they are willing to appoint a
representative far this very important senior center design committee,
