BACKGROUND: The Arts Commission recommends strategies to promote the artistic and cultural growth of Orange County, advises the Board of Commissioners on matters involving the arts, and acts as the granting panel for funding programs available to individual artists and non- profit groups sponsoring arts projects in Orange County. The Board of County Commissioners appoints all fifteen (15) At-Large members. RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board discuss appointments to the Arts Commission. 3 ORANGE COUNTY ARTS COMMISSION May 19, 2023 Laura Jensen Clerk to the Board of County Commissioners 300 W. Tryon St. Hillsborough, NC 27278 Dear Laura: The Orange County Arts Commission (OCAC) Advisory Board has unanimously approved the recommendation of Jenny Schultz-Thomas to Position #4, expiring March 31, 2026. Jenny is the Executive Director of the ArtsCenter and as one of the largest arts organizations in Orange County, her input is critical on our board. In addition, the board would like to request the appointment of Sadie Allen as the FY24 UNC Student Liaison. Sadie has worked in the visual and literary arts at UNC. She comes recommended by our vice- chair, Crystal Wu, having worked for her as an intern at UNC Arts Everywhere. While I was in high school, I also served as a student representative for my local community s Friend s of the Library Board, so I also have experience as a student liaison. Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board I would like to serve on this board to help UNC students get more involved with the arts and inform the county of what is happening in the arts community on campus. While I worked for Morrison Arts Studio and Arts Everywhere, I was able to learn about the arts scene here at UNC and I would love to serve on this board and expand on the artistic community that already exists on campus. Many arts organizations don t get coverage or funding and I hope to raise more awareness about the artistic culture at UNC.
