Background, education and experience relevant to this board:
I'm a career scientist, with 30 years experience, working for a major corporation. I have a
Bachelor's degree and a Masters degree in geology. In my career, I was responsible for planning
the business. That kind of experience teaches you to look at the big picture, but understand the
details, and how they might impact a course of action. My career also was rich with opportunities
to work collaboratively with others. Things like, effective meetings, facilitation, and strong
interpersonal skills were learned over the course of my career, and would be highly relevant here.
Reasons for wanting to serve on this board:
First of all, I'd like to get back to the community in my retired life. I've been very fortunate to have
a career that was fulfilling. My sense of gratitude is strong, and I just feel the need to serve.
Plus, I like the way Orange County works. And I would love the opportunity to serve a County.
Contribution to the diversity of viewpoints on this board:
I am an independent thinker. I respect the opinions of others, and see myself as an active
facilitator in meetings. I think that this skill helps to ensure that the full range of opinions is made
clear. I also was responsible for leading inclusion and diversity efforts in a major corporation for
two years.

Orange County Planning Board
Background, education and experience relevant to this board:
If I am chosen to serve, my professional and community experience as a problem solver, team
player and organizational leader will benefit the board. My training as an electrical engineer and
operations manager has taught me that it's important to evaluate available data and mind the
details. At the same time, I always seek to put the details in context, carefully weigh how
decisions may impact people and find balanced solutions. This focus comes from my nearly 30
years of experience in project management, people development and senior management in
large organizations. My community activities and organizational memberships have enabled me
to apply my skills, build a broader and deeper understanding of community concerns and
collaborate with others for positive outcomes.
Reasons for wanting to serve on this board:
My mother was a nurse and my father was a union member. My mother taught me the value of
service in her career and life values. Because my family benefited from good government policy
(toward workers) and I benefited from an excellent public school system and public university
system, I feel that it is my responsibility to give back by serving my community. As a long-time
7

resident in the rural buffer(1998-2007) and in the town of Chapel Hill (2008-present), I believe it
is important to find solutions for our growing population that balance the needs for sustainable
economic development, affordable housing options for our residents so that they can live and
work in Orange County and preservation of the rural nature of parts of our county. Furthermore,
solutions will also need to balance protection of our air and water quality, planning for climate
change resilience, and building economic resilience by diversifying our tax base.
Contribution to the diversity of viewpoints on this board:
My community service, professional experience and personal experience includes representing
the interests of people with disabilities. Also, I am the spouse of an immigrant who is a long-time
citizen and we raised our children in a bi-cultural, bilingual household.
Conflict of Interest:
As referenced above, we lived in the rural buffer for many years; my husband and I own our prior
home there.

Background, education and experience relevant to this board:
If appointed, I bring to the Orange County Planning Board more than 25 years' experience in an
array of industries, including film, television (DreamWorks, VH1, HBO). I also have a startup
under my belt which I successfully exited in 2014 (Stroome, the web's first collaborative video
editing site). Since returning to my native North Carolina five years ago, I have been working in
the residential real estate space, both in Chapel Hill as well as the broader Triangle area. I have

degrees from UNC-Chapel Hill (BA/Journalism); University Southern California
(MA/Communications Management); IESE Business School-Paley Center for Advanced
Management(AMP in Media).
Reasons for wanting to serve on this board:
Since 2017, 1 have served as a two-term member of the Chapel Hill Board of Adjustment. During
that time, I have heard dozens of variance cases regarding the Chapel Hill Land Use
Management Ordinance. As a member of that quasi-judicial body I've not only gained significant
subject matter knowledge on land use management, I've developed quite an interest in the
interpretation and development of policy around the town's land development programs and
strategies. My primary interest in joining the Orange County Planning Board is to obtain a
broader perspective beyond the "stone walls"of Chapel Hill.
Contribution to the diversity of viewpoints on this board:
During my five years on the Chapel Hill Board of Adjustment I have been exposed to, and am
acutely aware of, many of the topics I believe will come before the Orange County Planning
Board (appropriate and acceptable land use strategies, environmental protection, affordable
housing, economic development as well as addressing and servicing the "missing middle"). I
view my appointment to the Planning Board as a way to continue developing an informed point of
view that can impact the broader conversation across the county.

Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board
I've faced hardship owning businesses in orange county and I see business being driven away,
kindness being put on the backburner, and the welcoming nature of our community being stifled
by our own rules and regulations. I want to serve as a voice for my neighbors and protect the
community, while encouraging growth.
How would your particpation on this board contribute to the diversity of viewpoints?
I have a diverse background, coming from a lower-middle class family in Ohio, moving to the
area to learn at one of our esteemed universities, and falling in love with the area. My viewpoint
is unique in that I've lived in rough settings, rural, farming, and also in crowded metro areas. I've
lived my life with family and friends from poor, underserved and diverse social and economic
settings. I've also lived in the world of higher education and work well with people who can affect
positive change by investing in the local area. My input, although only a small voice, I'd hope
would be reflective of the diverse population in Orange County.
Do you have any personal or business interest(s) that could create a conflict of interest
(either real or perceived) if you are appointed to this board?
I own multiple businesses in orange county, including one that has been shuttered due to zoning
issues. I will abstain from any matters directly associated with any of my business.

Please explain how your background, education and experience is relevant to this board
I have lived in OC since 2004. The growth in the county is exploding. I saw this in my hometown.
In order to control how the area grows, it requires input on what can happen if zoning is
changed. There are things that some people may think could not happen, when in reality it
can...like increasing density and not height. Some think the density can t be done but it can and
will with special approvals and then change to height.
Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board
I want to help growth in Orange County to continue but be smart. I want to help preserve the
lifestyle that we sought by moving here. Money is not everything.

Orange County Planning Board
Please explain how your background, education and experience is relevant to this board
My background in city and regional planning is directly related to the operation of the legislative
body. I am currently a first-masters student at UNC working to complete the program in planning.
This is a follow-up to my undergraduate studies at Appalachian State University in Community
and Regional Planning. Other experience includes working as a volunteer on advisory
committees for the Towns of Boone NC and Carrboro NC. The specific focus of these
committees was and is on sustainability in economic development, and the natural environment.
Other relevant experience includes interning with the Department of City Planning in Pittsburgh,
PA. There I gained insights into planning issues and operating procedures of governing bodies,
namely the planning board and board of adjustment.
Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board
My reasons for wanting to serve on this board stems from a desire to create positive outcomes
for the community I live in. I see the need to answer a call for help put out by government to help
others. More than that, this is an excellent opportunity to be involved in practical matters of
implementation, for which there is always a need to understand nuance in order to understand
what success is and to be successful.
How would your particpation on this board contribute to the diversity of viewpoints?
29

Being young, I have access to viewpoints of upcoming generations. I would have the ability to act
as a voice on issues that matter to them. Additionally, as a member of the LGBT+ community, I
would bring perspective on issues that would impact that demographic, and because of being a
part of a marginalized population, I have a special motivation to advocate for those who are
underrepresented.
Do you have any personal or business interest(s)that could create a conflict of interest
(either real or perceived) if you are appointed to this board?
