BACKGROUND: The Arts Commission recommends strategies to promote the artistic and cultural growth of Orange County, advises the Board of Commissioners on matters involving the arts, and acts as the granting panel for funding programs available to individual artists and non- profit groups sponsoring arts projects in Orange County. The Board of County Commissioners appoints all fifteen (15) At-Large members. Tryon St. Hillsborough, NC 27278 Dear Laura: At the April 10, 2023, meeting of the Orange County Arts Commission (OCAC) Advisory Board, the board unanimously approved the recommendation of Gideon Young to Position #10, expiring March 31, 2026. Gideon is a local poet, former teacher, and current teaching artist. In addition to providing an additional voice for the literary arts community, Gideon will offer critical insight regarding arts integration in our local school systems. It is one of New England's largest artists' communities. During this period, I was active in the Fort Point Arts Community, Inc., where I was a board member for four years (including three as clerk) and chaired the Gallery Committee for six years; in 2020, my last year before returning to North Carolina, the gallery was selected by Boston Magazine Best in Boston. In 2007, 1 co-founded Fort Point Theatre Channel, an arts collective centered on performance. I continue to serve as one of the 16 active co-artistic directors, participating in monthly meetings via Zoom in its mission dedicated to creating and sustaining new configurations of the performing arts. Earlier, with the Jamaica Plain Arts Council between 1993 and 1999, 1 was board member, secretary, treasurer, and Strategic Planning Committee co- chair for the successful restructuring of this Boston neighborhood arts organization. And in my earlier life in North Carolina, I was a member for six years of the Actors' Coop of North Carolina, based in Carrboro at the ArtsCenter, (then known as the ArtSchool). Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board For 15 years, I raised funds for Fort Point Theatre Channel, the Boston-based arts-centered performance group I co-founded in 2007 and co-directed until returning to North Carolina in 2020. In addition, employment in nonprofits for since the mid-1970s involved me in fundraising, giving me that perspective on the possibilities of what funding organizations could achieve. From the other side of the table, I served on the board of Resist, a national funder of social change for ten years, including six as its president. This provide insight into the funder's perspective on dispensing funds as we both decided on all grants and discussed how best to support grantees. The board addressed such questions as long-term vs. short-term funding, project grants vs. general support, and the role of the arts in social change. I would welcome the opportunity to bring funder and fundraiser perspectives to advancing the arts and serving the community here in Orange County. How would your particpation on this board contribute to the diversity of viewpoints? I bring decades of experience as a fundraiser and as a funder. This combination as an artist makes me quite sensitive to both viewpoints. On the board of Resist, I was proud to be part of an organization that was dedicated to supporting valuable work and communities that would NOT be funded by traditional foundations. In playing the producer role in my years with Fort Point Theatre Channel, we continuing sought ways the arts could serve our community, broadly defined, and use the arts to create bridges across many divisions in our society. For example, the last major project I created and led at Fort Point Theatre Channel was a€ceTempest Reconfigureda€ h 2019. We collaborated with five Boston arts and community organizations to explore the contemporary relevance of Shakespeare's "The Tempest."-Using a variety of art and performance forms, the partners and FPTC created short works drawing on themes from The Tempest, such as the consequences of colonialism, racism, gender stereotypes, immigration, and climate change.
