PURPOSE: To loin federal and state governments in designating the momh of May as Older
Amercans Month, a time to honor older citizens for their contributions to society; and also to
designate the week of May 12 through May 111 as Senior Center Week in Orange County to
recognize local senior centers as focal points for providing opportunities and services to older
citizens in Orange County.
BACKGROUND: For a number of years, the Orange County Commissioners have issued
proclamations for Older Artredrans Month and Senior Center Week. In 2002, there are
approximately 15,500 Orange County residents who are sixty years of age and older, and 1,400
residents are over eighty-five years old.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with approval of the
proclamations.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the
proclamations designating May as Older Americans Month and May 12 through May 18 as
Senior Center Week in Orange County and authorize the Chair to sign the proclamations.

WHEREAS, All Orange County citizens enjoy the fruits of older persona
and War labors aad are=plead to continue to make
Orange County a good place in which to live;and,
WHEREAS, Orange County also wishes to ad aside a special monti for
recogNtion of the older segment of its cit¢eruy;
NOW,THEREFORE, We,We Orange County Board of Commissioacm,join
the GovernorofNorth Carolina and the president of We

OLDER AMERICANS MONTH

WHEREAS, Local communities support over 12,000 Senior Centers
m the united States,and,
WHEREAS, Orange County has recognized one importance of Senor
Cant«s and hie provided leadership in the development
and operations of such facilities in the County,and,
WHEREAS, Senior Carom a56m the deputy,self-woM and
independence of older persons by facilitating their
decisions and knowledge,and enabling their continued
contribution to the commuwty,and,
WHEREAS, Encouraged and supported by the Older American Act,
Sector Centers function as service dehvery focal points,
help older parson to help themselves and each ethic,
and offer opportunities to become physically active,
mentally challenged,continually supported and socially
involved,and,
WHEREAS, the month of May has historically been proclaimed

country are giving special recognition to older perso

PROCLAIM the week of May 12 through May 18,2002 as
SENIOR CENTER WEEK
