Please explain how your background, education and experience is relevant to this board
I have been fortunate to live in two communities with well-integrated, multi-modal transport
systems; Davis CA and Toulouse France. I have also lived in un-coordinated commuter
corridors where transportation was the single greatest drag on economic development and
social equity; Santa Cruz CA. I have no specific expertise or experience, but I have long
pondered the unique transportation (and social) challenges and opportunities of a community
with a big hole in the middle. The triangle.
Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board
Today I am an ex-burb resident on the edge, but out of reach of a sound OC/Triangle
transportation network; far east Eno Township. My path from home to work at RTP is shared by
many ex-burbanites, but is generally not served. There are pragmatic logistical and financial
reasons for that. Consequently, my best contribution for the past 15 years has been to ride my
back to work 3-4 times a month (which is increasingly scary). I would like do more for the
community and contribute to improved transportation access and engagement for the diverse
array of ex-burban commuters of OC. I am a distance runner with interest in making our county
safe and enjoyable for pedestrians. Finally, I am fortunate to be an EV owner and would bring
my three year experience of EV commuting to the OUTBoard.
How would your particpation on this board contribute to the diversity of viewpoints?
I have lived within transportation systems that enhance social equity and economic vitality; and
systems that do the opposite. OC is a unique situation, and well-situated to leverage our
foundation of bus, pedestrian, bike and automotive corridors to improve the ability of our
5

residents to efficiently get to where their food, schools, jobs, recreation and homes are. I would
bring aspiration for a coordinated system that enables this for as many or our residents as
possible. As well as a pragmatic perspective that resources are finite, cars will dominate for the
foreseeable future and there is a time for studies and talking and a time to act/make and
advocate for recommendations and proposals.
Do you have any personal or business interest(s)that could create a conflict of interest
(either real or perceived) if you are appointed to this board?

Member of Orange County Parks and Recreation Council
Past Service on Orange County Advisory Boards:
Orange County Parks and Recreation (December 2021 - present)
Boards/Commissions applied for:
Opioid Advisory Committee
Background, education and experience relevant to this board:
I graduated from UNC with my Master's in Social Work degree in 2015. While working as the
hotline supervisor with Orange County Rape Crisis Center, I audited a course on substance use
due to the intersection of trauma and addiction. This knowledge was directly relevant to my work
with trauma survivors, training volunteers to work with trauma survivors, and supporting victims
and survivors as they navigated healthcare, legal, and other service systems.
Reasons for wanting to serve on this board:
Substance use correlates strongly with past experience of trauma. I want to do anything possible
to help victims and survivors of trauma regain control of their own life, which often involves
interactions with legal, healthcare, and social services. In addition to supporting survivors of
trauma, I would like to advocate for systems and services that are responsive to the needs of
survivors of trauma while also supporting harm reduction and improved outcomes from
substance use and abuse.
Contribution to the diversity of viewpoints on this board:
I want to be honest and up front that I may not contribute much diversity to the board. I am a cis-
gender, white woman with stable housing and income. But through my professional and
volunteer experiences, I have worked with numerous individuals experiencing substance use
issues.

Orange Unified Transportation Board
Background, education and experience relevant to this board:
My most relevant experience is as a car owner and a user of public transportation in Orange
County. No specific training or experience in issues related to transport.
Reasons for wanting to serve on this board:
I want to be more involved in decisions about changes and updates to transport plans because I
am directly impacted by traffic as a resident of Orange County. I have first-hand experience with
the public transit available in Chapel Hill, and the public transit options connecting the rural parts
of the county to the town. I am also particularly interested in possible future developments to
improve pedestrian and cyclist safety, and the possibility of designating car-free zones.
Contribution to the diversity of viewpoints on this board:
As a cis-gender, white, upper-middle class woman, I experience a lot of privilege on a daily
basis. I think my greatest contribution to diversity would be to bring in a perspective from a
younger generation.
Conflict of Interest:

Background, education and experience relevant to this board:
As co-director of the Philosopher's Way Trail Run, I have experience communicating with UNC
forest management, monitoring weather and other factors impacting the ability to hold a race,
working collaboratively to make last-minute changes to race procedure
Reasons for wanting to serve on this board:
The Community Center Park in Chapel Hill has been a central part of my life since moving to
Chapel Hill as a graduate student in August 2013. After I finished school and moved to
Hillsborough, it remained a central part of my life. Before the pandemic hit
Conflict of Interest:
None that I know of. I am an employee of Duke Clinical Research Institute.
