BACKGROUND: The Advisory Board on Aging suggests policy and makes recommendations to the Board of Commissioners and the Department on Aging while acting as the liaison between older adults of the County and County government. It is charged with promoting needed services, programs, and funding that impacts older residents. The Board of County Commissioners appoints all twelve (12) members. Box 8181 Hillsborough, NC 27278 Dear Chair Bedford: At the February 14th meeting of the Orange County Advisory Board on Aging they made several recommendations for board appointments. The board requests the following recommendations to be taken into consideration: The board is requesting that Colin Austin's term be extended by one year. He is the vice-chair and with the current board chair, Heather Altman,rotating off the board in June the board needs his leadership expertise for at least an additional year. The board is requesting that Jacqulyn Podger be considered for appointment to position#7. She is the new chair of the Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee. She has been both a volunteer and in paid employment in aging services in our community. She will be a great asset to the Aging Board. The board would like to request that Rachel Bearman be appointed for a second term. She has been actively engaged in the Master Aging Plan work including the development of the 2022-27 MAP and is now working on implementation with the Community Support and Health Services workgroup. And finally,the board is requesting the appointment of Dr. Michael Joseph to Heather Altman's position#11 when her term ends on June 30, 2023. Dr.Joseph comes with extensive experience in aging related services. He is an active volunteer in our community and would make a great addition to the Aging Board. Currently I volunteer in various capacities for seniors in Orange County. Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: Senior living has always been one of my passions. I have always worked in some capacity with older adults. My husband and I become involved in an Adopt a Grandparent Program and enjoyed relationships with several seniors through the years. I believe I could bring much to this board in terms of my passion and experience. A recent graduate of NC Leading Age's Leadership Academy, I have spent the past year learning about how to advocate for older adults and those who serve them. In my professional life, I serve older adults of fairly substantial financial means, and though the community I work for gives back in many ways, I have a personal interest in advocating for seniors from diverse economic circumstances. During advisory board meetings, a member shall immediately disclose any potential conflict of interest and request to be excused from voting when he or she has a conflict of interest. 2. Advisory board members should act with integrity and with independence from improper influence as they exercise the functions of their offices. Characteristics and behaviors that are consistent with this standard are: 1. Adhering firmly to a code of sound values. 2. Behaving consistently and with respect towards everyone with whom they interact. 3. Exhibiting trustworthiness. 4. Living as if they are on duty as appointed officials regardless of where they are or what they are doing. 5. Using their best independent judgment to pursue the common good as they see it, presenting their opinions to all in a reasonable, forthright, consistent manner. 6. Remaining incorruptible, self-governing, and not subject to improper influence, while at the same time being able to consider the opinions and ideas of others. 7. This journey we are on began when my mother passed away in 2012, and my wife and I became the primary caregivers for my father, a retired dentist with advanced Alzheimer's. We learned a great deal about the caregiving industry, using CNAs/Companion caregivers to augment our care for my father during the time he was with us. When it was no longer safe for him to remain at our home, I conducted extensive research on memory care facilities in Wake County before finally selecting a new home for him. During his stay there, we continued to provide volunteer support to his facility and donated a number of items for the care of their patients. For caregiver training, we attended conferences designed specifically for caregivers in the Alzheimer's and dementia area, and we joined caregiver support organizations which provided ongoing support over the Iifecycle of the caregiving experience into the post period after the loved one has passed away. Reasons Want to Serve Board #1 As I've worked to build our own business, I've visited a number of adult care facilities in the area. All facilities are not the same, and many are suffering from staffing shortages leading to limited care for patients which sometimes may even lead to injury. I'm passionate about all seniors having dignity and quality care in their last years regardless of their demographic or personal situation. Most recently I ran global sales for an international company where I was daily presented with the challenges for working with completely different cultures. If it matters, I have had two daughters living in Chapel Hill/Carrboro for the last twelve years. They have both been very involved in the food services industry of Orange County during this time. If anyone reading this ever ate at Panciuto in Hillsborough prior to the Iockdown, they have more than likely met them both.
