Advisory Board on Aging
MINUTES
Tuesday, October 11, 1 - 3 p.m.
Passmore Center- Hybrid

1. Introductions and Announcements
a. Colin noted that Janice's presentation to the Board of County Commissioners was on point
and commissioners were very impressed. Heather suggested sharing link to that meeting.
2. Approval of Minutes - September 13, 2022
a. Heather requested members to review the minutes.
b. Dick pointed out grammatical error in 10.c.
c. Moved to correct error and approve minutes
Director's report
3. Staff updates
a. Marie was nominated for statewide honor-Stephen E. Sallee Assistive Technology Award
of Excellence for 2022 award and won! Marie spoke a few words about the Durable Medical
Equipment loaner program and gave a shout out to Vibeke for starting the program many
years ago.
i. Purpose of the award: recognize individuals or organizations that has made a
significant impact on the lives of people with disabilities and/or chronic conditions
by expanding access to, promoting, and/or demonstrating the benefits of assistive
technology.
ii. Statewide nomination process sponsored by the NC Assistive Technology program
and its grant advisory council
iii. 60 award recipients since 1995
iv. Scope of award recipients - elected state and congressional officials, speech
language pathologists, occupational and physical therapists; college educators, k-
12 educators/administrators; providers of assistive technology equipment or
services, at professionals
b. Updates on renting a storage unit for durable medical equipment and requesting a
temporary employee for 8 hours per week to assist with the DME Loaner Program.
c. Heather suggested to name the DME program into something fun!
d. Alison Smith moved to Lisa Meinert's position in Aging Transitions team.
e. Lisa Meinert is now the Passmore Facility Manager.
f. Allie Burress has moved to the Volunteer Coordinator position.
g. Seymour Center facility manager position has been posted- if you know anyone, please
encourage them to apply.
h. Meghan Rushing, Program Coordinator Assistant, has accepted a leadership position with
the Town of Apex. Job posting will be coming soon.
4. Update on Seymour Center Great Hall flood remediation and renovations
a. Some water during hurricane, but in a different spot. More than likely a roofer will be
needed.
S. COVID update
a. Encourage everyone you know to get a flu shot.
6. Lunch program update
a. Discontinued curbside pick-up, but still have grab and go available inside. The Grab and Go
meal is being funded by ARPA funds. The meals being served in the dining room are
funded through HCCBG.
7. Seymour Center early voting site -Voting begins on Oct 20
8. 8tn annual Direct Care Worker Awards
a. Will be held Nov. 3 from 4:30 - 6 p.m. at the Seymour center and virtually
b. Award categories are:
i. Client Impact
ii. Longevity
iii. Leadership
iv. Going the Extra Mile, and
v. Rising Star
vi. One person will be chosen as the "Direct Care Worker of the Year."
9. Duke Caregiver Conference, October 28 - Sheraton Imperial Hotel, RTP
Directors Report continued with items not listed on the agenda:
LGBTQ Out and Proud dinner at the Seymour Center on Oct 11, 2022.
Recent security issue at the Seymour Center-younger unsheltered person hanging outside in the
evenings. It is difficult to manage the center and keep staff staff with only one staff person in the
evenings and weekends. Last Sunday, October 9, 2022 a volunteer gardening team member saw a
person sleeping in our garden shed and was cursed out by this person. The SOHRAD was notified.
Medicare Part D reenrollment- October 15-December 7. 500-600 persons will be assisted with
both in person and virtual with SHIIP volunteers. Call to make an appointment.
New business
10. Board appointments on BOCC agenda for Oct. 25. Saru Salvi is being recommended for
appointment.
11. Update on reappointment of Senior Tar Heel delegates - Delegate is Dick White and Alternate
delegate is Keith Cook, but he has not actively participated due to health issues.
a. Vibeke Talley is willing to be the alternate.
2022-27 Master Aging plan
12.Age My Way NC summit

b. Governor Cooper spoke and it is anticipated that he will be submitting a resolution for NC to
sign on to be an Age-Friendly state.
c. Orange County Department on Aging and the BOCC signed in 2016 for us to be the first Age
Friendly county in NC.
d. NC is 8th in the US for number of seniors.
13. Reflections on MAP presentation to the BOCC
14. MAP workgroups are finishing up their first quarter meetings and development of Year One 2022-
27 MAP priorities.
15. On-going recruitment for new MAP intern or contract staff person
a. Janice talked about need for a PhD student who can be with the department for 2/3 years.We
are also recruiting a couple interns to work with Project EngAGE and Wellness.
b. Heather shared that she knows of a MPH student who can work 200 hours. This student will be
available from Dec 2022 to May 2023 as part of a practicum.
16. Fall meeting of the MAP Steering Committee -tentative for Nov. 4
17. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion -outreach to underserved communities, communities of color and
faith based organizations
a. New part time temp staff, Clayton Foster,will be coordinating our outreach efforts. This
position is being funded through ARPA funds.
b. Reaching back to community and faith based organizations. Send letter and survey for needs.
Explore ways to reconnect and collaborate.
c. 150 faith based organizations were identified in our county by a previous intern. Prior to the
pandemic these organizations were invited to a quarterly breakfast hosted by UNC Healthcare
- Hillsborough Campus to provide a time for OCDoA to share information and provide
resources.
d. Clayton will also be working with Kim Lamon-Loperfido to launch the Hoarding task force that
is a new MAP initiative. Rachel Bearman requested to be included in the Task Force as
MOWOCNC is seeing this in more clients being served by them.

18. Dementia Friendly Business Campaign -Alison Smith is the new coordinator
19. Senior Tar Heel legislature
a. Dick White- STHL set priorities.
b. 8 million recurring funds for staff needs.
c. 2.5 million for 169 senior centers.
d. HCCBG grant increase
e. Increase long term facility ombudsman
f. NC is losing$521 million a month by not expanding Medicaid
20.Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee - No report
21. Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee
a. Vibeke Talley- requirements for training is 35 hrs for each volunteer. The committee has a
number of vacancies and the lengthy training requirements is not helping this situation.
