BACKGROUND: The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline — previously known as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline — is a national network of more than 200 crisis centers that helps thousands of people overcome crises every day. Local and state sources as well as the Department of Health and Human Services' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) support these centers. As of July 16, 2022, all calls and text messages to "988" route to a 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline call center. Adult Mental Health Program Coordinator Lisa DeCiantis and Community Mental Health Section Chief Saarah Waleed from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services will be present at the meeting to share information and answer questions. FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no Orange County financial impact associated with this item. SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: The following Orange County Social Justice Goals are applicable to this item: • GOAL: CREATE A SAFE COMMUNITY The reduction of risks from vehicle/traffic accidents, childhood and senior injuries, gang activity, substance abuse and domestic violence. • GOAL: ENSURE ECONOMIC SELF-SUFFICIENCY The creation and preservation of infrastructure, policies, programs and funding necessary for residents to provide shelter, food, clothing and medical care for themselves and their dependents. 2 This additional resource will create a safe community and ensure a community network of basic human services and infrastructure that maintains, protects and promotes the well-being of all residents in Orange County. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: There is no Orange County Environmental Responsibility Goal impact associated with this presentation. RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board receive the presentation as information and provide any comments or questions.
