ORANGE COUNTY
DEPARTMENT OF ASSET MANAGEMENT SERVICES
Memorandum

From: Amy Eckberg, Sustainability Programs Manager

Subject: Electric Vehicle Charger Suitability Analysis — A Collaborative
Planning Project with Orange County, Town of Chapel Hill,
Carrboro, Hillsborough and UNC
Project Summary:
Transportation is now the leading source of greenhouse gas emissions in North
Carolina. In response, Orange County, UNC, and the towns of Carrboro,
Hillsborough, and Chapel Hill are coordinating on an initiative to identify areas
within the county that are well suited for new public electric vehicle charging
stations.
Based on a model shared by the City of Raleigh and using local data inputs, a
screening tool (interactive map) is being developed to identify key areas within
each community that can be further vetted by property owners to help inform
where new level 2 electric vehicle charging stations should go. The tool will be
finalized and shared over the next couple of months.
Examples of these key, high-impact areas include destinations like downtowns,
public parks, and shopping centers. This timely initiative proactively identifies
locations where new federal and state funding can be utilized to implement more
2
public electric vehicle infrastructure in Orange County. Staff will continue to
coordinate and update the tool as new data and technology become available.
