BACKGROUND: The Arts Commission recommends strategies to promote the artistic and cultural growth of Orange County, advises the Board of Commissioners on matters involving the arts, and acts as the granting panel for funding programs available to individual artists and non- profit groups sponsoring arts projects in Orange County. The Board of County Commissioners appoints all fifteen (15) At-Large members. RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board discuss an appointment to the Arts Commission. 3 ORANGE COUNTY ARTS COMMISSION August 19,2022 Laura Jensen Clerk to the Board of County Commissioners 300 W.Tryon St. Hillsborough,NC 27278 Dear Laura: At the August 8,2022,meeting of the Orange County Arts Commission(OCAC)Advisory Board,the board unanimously approved the recommendation of Josh Rosenstein to Position#14,expiring September 30,2025. This seat was previously held by Justin Haslett,who will not be serving a second term. Josh will serve as invaluable role with our board as liaison to the Chapel Hill Arts Commission.In addition,Josh is heavily involved in the arts community as a stand-up comedian and regular open mic host in Chapel Hill. My mother s family has lived in Orange County most of the 268 years the country has existed. I spent ten years working full time for MerleFest in marketing and sponsorship. I currently host music programs on WCOM, where I am also board secretary, and WHUP. I formerly hosted a local arts talk show on WCHL. I have supervised non-profit radio stations, an archival repository, theatre programs, and documentary film producers and budgets up $3,000,000. 1 have nearly 50 years experience serving on non- profit board and government commissions. I know both the non-profit and for profit arts worlds and have worldwide connections in the folk arts. Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: To serve the community, represent the perspective of northern Orange and Little River Township. I am personally concerned about unplanned, unchecked growth rather than well managed development and preservation. Transportation planning involves expensive decisions years in the future with consequences lasting decades after that. It involves often brutal prioritization to help the BOCC and County staff guide the county s future through complex issues with implications far beyond bikes, buses, and roads. The OUTboard are a key venue for citizens shaping the future of our county. Contribution to the diversity of viewpoints on this board: I am the rare person with deep Orange County roots and memories going back more than 60 years, who has lived in Chapel Hill, Carrboro, White Cross, and a home owner up north in Little River Township since 2016.
