Date of Incorporation (Month/Year): 05/2010 2. Agency’s Purpose/Mission (no more than a few sentences): PORCH Chapel Hill-Carrboro fights hunger by mobilizing our neighbors to provide non- perishable and fresh food for families, schools, and pantries. Our monthly food drives collect food and funds to support many initiatives, including: • ensuring our local food pantries are well-stocked with non-perishable food; • distributing fresh food and grocery gift cards directly into the hands of families with children in the public schools identified as food insecure; • creating and stocking pantries with healthy snacks in each of the 20 public schools and the community’s after-school programs; • providing emergency food support to community social service agencies during COVID-19, and • creating more public awareness about the severity of hunger in the community, and the benefits of fresh food consumption. 3. Please provide a brief description of your organization’s past achievements in carrying out similar projects and evidence of successful record of meeting proposed budgets and timetables (no more than 100 words). Since 2010, PORCH’s Food for Families program has grown, serving over 500 families (2135 individuals) living in poverty in our community at its peak in 2021. FFF has received Outside Agency funding for the past six years and has met all its performance measures each year, successfully delivering fresh food according to budget that is consumed by our enrolled families. FFF expanded enrollment during the pandemic, and we anticipate continued significant need. We have provided essential food support, uninterrupted, including grocery gift cards and fresh food each month. We also supported other community food distribution efforts, providing leadership and volunteers. 4. Living Wage: Does this agency pay permanent employees a minimum living wage? (Yes / No) NA If yes, is this agency an Orange County Living Wage Certified Employer? Yes If no, please briefly explain. PORCH is currently an all-volunteer run organization. We are in the process of adding at least one employee in 2022. Over the course of the next year, the Towns and County will conduct a comprehensive racial-equity analysis of the program and we are requesting basic information about your organization’s racial equity work. a. Please describe how you have involved the intended beneficiaries of the proposed project in the planning and design process (in 100 words or less). PORCH intentionally engages participants in evaluations of our programs. Every year we survey our program beneficiaries to gather feedback on the impact of our programs and areas for improvement. Over the past two years we engaged three new people of color and two LGBTQ individuals onto our Board and this year initiated an Advisory Panel comprised of program participants to provide input to the Board. Two of our current Board members have experienced food insecurity themselves, so have lived experience that informs their work with PORCH. We are committed to a diverse organization and to listening to our program participants. b. How has your organization incorporated racial equity goals into your organizational goals? The repercussions of food insecurity are disproportionately felt among communities of color, representing over 92% of PORCH’s program participants. PORCH is striving to address racial equity and inclusion as part of our organizational goals. Our Board participated in training through the Racial Equity Institute’s Groundwater program. We have been diversifying our Board of Directors and the voices represented in decision making within the organization, and actively listening to our participants. Further, we are seeking to add a Board member with DEI experience to help us assess our weaknesses and incorporate additional specific improvement goals into our planning. c. Please fill in the below questions and provide any additional context on the racial composition of the organization and board leadership: i. % of staff that are Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (BIPOC) : NA ii. % of board that are BIPOC: 40% iii. % of staff that have attended racial equity training: NA d. Please describe any additional activities your organization is doing to address racial equity. With an emphasis on understanding and addressing racial equity, and with the addition of new more diverse backgrounds on our Board, we intend to develop goals and actions in our strategic planning for the near and long term to empower people of color in leadership and service of the organization. Program Name: Food for Families (FFF) Program Primary Contact and Title: Debbie Horwitz, Founder and FFF Program Director Telephone Number: 919-971-1749 E-Mail: debbie@porchcommunities.org 7. Please briefly describe the proposed program, including an explanation of how it aligns with the Town of Chapel Hill and Carrboro’s Results Framework, and Orange County BOCC Goals and Priorities, and the target population to benefit from the program. (250 words or less) Over 10.8% of adults and 12.2% of children in Orange County are food insecure, meaning that they lack sufficient food for an active, healthy life. Hungry kids perform worse in school, are sick more often, and have more social and behavioral problems. Eighty percent of families enrolled in PORCH’s Food for Families program have incomes that are at or below federal poverty level (100% below 1.5 times poverty level). In a recent survey, 72% of families report having less income due to COVID-19, and 69% worry about getting enough food to eat. PORCH’s FFF is a unique program that increases livelihood security for 485 families (with 1187 children), identified by school social workers as struggling to afford sufficient food. FFF provides fresh foods to low-income families with children each month (including many refugees), with a quantity and variety of highly nutritious fresh food that is not provided by any other local pantries or hunger relief organizations. FFF currently provides fresh food (e.g., wide variety of fresh produce, chicken, eggs, milk, and more) each month (totaling over 33,000 pounds per month), lasting an average of 10 days. Since the beginning of the pandemic, PORCH has also provided grocery gift cards each month to our participating families (totaling $626,000), providing the ability and dignity to make food choices and to purchase important necessary household items. The gift cards have been highly impactful and we will provide them as possible based on availability of funds to support this component of the program.
