BACKGROUND: Marcia Argo, an Orange County Schools teacher at Efland-Cheeks Elementary School, has served approximately fifty (50) years in the field of education. In 1985, Mrs. Argo retired from State of Georgia Public School Systems after more than 33 years of instructional service. In 1986, she began an interim position at Cameron Park School in Hillsborough, and during the next two years filled in an interim position at Efland-Cheeks Elementary. In 1989, she began serving in a third grade class at Efland-Cheeks Elementary, and this year moved to a remedial reading position. Mrs. Argo's educational background includes an undergraduate degree from Piedmont College in northeast Georgia, a Masters of Education from the University of Georgia, a 6' year Degree of Education from the University of Georgia, and the completion of coursework toward a Doctorate. She pursued all of these degrees while raising a family of three daughters and actively teaching. Mrs. Argo's other achievements include Life Certification in Education from the State of Georgia, continuing education and rigorously maintaining her re-certification, and continuing to teach and voluntarily tutor today's youth. (Mrs. Argo has always voluntarily tutored beyond the classroom hours to ensure that students progressed toward their goals.) Education was such a focus in the Argo home that her husband James joined her in the teaching profession during the 1960's and two of their three daughters also entered the profession. Mrs. Argo and her husband live at 2715 Ode Turner Road in Hillsborough. She enjoys spending time with her three daughters, twelve grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. 2 She is a member of the Hillsborough Exchangettes, a community service club, and the First United Methodist Church of Hillsborough. FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with approval of the resolution. RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the resolution recognizing and honoring Marcia Argo for her years of service in the field of education and authorize the Chair to sign the resolution. 3 ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS RESOLUTION HONORING MARCIA ARGO, AN ORANGE COUNTY SCHOOLS ELEMENTARY TEACHER, ON HER APPROXIMATELY FIFTY YEARS OF SERVICE IN THE FIELD OF EDUCATION WHEREAS, Marcia Argo, an Orange County Schools teacher at Efland-Cheeks Elementary School, has served approximately fifty (50) years in the field of education; and, WHEREAS, Mrs. Argo retired from State of Georgia Public School Systems in 1985 after more than 33 years of instructional service and has since served Orange County Schools, including the last 13 years in a teaching position at Efland-Cheeks Elementary; and, WHEREAS, Mrs. Argo pursued and received an undergraduate degree from Piedmont College in northeast Georgia, a Masters of Education from the University of Georgia, a 6` year Degree of Education from the University of Georgia, and completed coursework toward a Doctorate, all while raising a family of three daughters; and, WHEREAS, Mrs. Argo achieved Life Certification in Education from the State of Georgia, has pursued continuing education and rigorously maintained her re-certification, and continues to teach and voluntarily tutor today's youth beyond the classroom hours to ensure that students progress toward their goals; NOW THEREFORE, do we, the Board of Commissioners for Orange County, North Carolina hereby recognize and honor Mrs. Marcia Argo for her many years of dedication and service to the education of youth in the State of Georgia and here in Orange County, and express our appreciation to her for her efforts in support of the educational needs of students in Orange County.
