HomeMy WebLinkAboutNursing Home CAC minutes 02042020 Orange County Nursing Home Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes February 4, 2020 5:30pm, Seymour Center, Chapel Hill,NC CALL TO ORDER by Vibeke Talley, Chair • Members Present: Vibeke Talley, Martha Bell, Jackie Podger,, Jerry Ann Gregory, Autumn Cox (Ombudsman), Annie Deaver(Orange County Department on Aging), Carol Kelly, Linda Davis • Members Excused: Stephanie Boswell OLD BUSINESS; • Discussion/Approval Minutes November 5, 2019: Minutes approved as written. NEW BUSINESS; • Membership: o Reluctantly we say good bye and thank you for their service to: Jerry Ann Gregory whose term will end March, 2020. An extraordinary member who has faithfully served this community's elder adults, taken on officer responsibilities, and advocated for improved services in the facilities within our county. We wish her well. Annie Deaver, Aging Transitions Administrator, Orange County Department on Aging. Annie joined us in 2018 and has been a great asset to the committee for these past months. She is leaving to become the Associate Executive Director at Brighton Gardens (Assisted Living) in Raleigh. We know she will have great success in her new job and hope to see her again at various conferences. Internal candidates will be interviewed 2/12/20 o Proposed New Member Steven Day: Autumn announced that Mr. Day had been approved for membership. He will be attending a required orientation session sometime in the Spring. Our committee continues to seek new members; we are authorized 12; current membership is 7 (excluding the Ombudsman and DOA representative). Autumn will help others in her office to develop a recruitment information pamphlet for our committee like one used by the Wake County Committee. Our members will be able to distribute them to help with our efforts to find additional interested parties willing to advocate for our county's long term care residents. • Annual Committee Officer Election: Vibeke Tally has consented to continue as the Chair of the committee and was duly elected to the position. Martha Bell has consented to continue as the Committee's Secretary and was duly elected to the position. • Site Visit Reports (for Quarter Jan, Feb, Mar 2020) Please note: Several of the Skilled Nursing Facilities have recently had surveys conducted by the NC Division of Health Service Regulation (DHSR). These included both Annual Surveys and Complaint Surveys. Reports can be found on the Medicare.gov website. o Peak Brookshire: report accepted with changes. Points of Concern and follow up included food service (the facility is dealing with a new vendor and staff who will have additional education regarding procedures); call bell response times by staff; medication cart and a mechanical room found unlocked and unattended. o Pruitt-Carolina Pointe: Accepted with changes. Points of Concern and follow up included: nail care; ungracious comments to residents/family members when asked for assistance. One resident found reading voiced the hope that the facility could provide more library-like material. • Ombudsman Report(Autumn Cox, Ombudsman) o Continuing Education Opportunities: further information will be forthcoming from the Ombudsman office regarding: June 101h at the NC Rural Center there will be a seminar provided by Elder Abuse Awareness. Speakers will address: Social Isolation, Human Trafficking and LGBTQ Issues; and May 201h the NC Partnership plans a seminar on Adult Abuse. • Department on Aging (Annie Deaver) o The office will begin interviewing internal candidates on 02/12/2020 to replace Annie as she moves to another position in Raleigh. o Project EngAGE, a cohort of senior leaders trained by the Department completed education for five graduates. They are tasked with supporting and developing senior resource teams for the Department. o SHARP direct care worker awards is set for 5/14/20, 4:30-6pm at the Passmore Center. This is a ceremony which celebrates direct care workers throughout Orange County. • Announcements by Committee Members: o UNC School of Nursing: a group is beginning an"Engage Study" and seeking participants to speak with a SON student about their observations of current engagement and safety strategies. o New assignment sheets were distributed due to recent membership changes. • Reminders: o Quarterly Activity Reports due no later than April 15, however the Ombudsman Office appreciates any report forwarded earlier than the due date. o Quarterly Site Visit Reports due no later than March 31, 2020; please provide copies to both the Committee Chair and Ombudsman. • Next Meeting: May 5, 2020 Respectfully submitted, Martha Bell, Secretary
