Meeting Minutes May 3, 2022

CALL TO ORDER by Jackie Podger,Acting Chair
o Members Present: Martha Bell, Jackie Podger, Carol Kelly, Kelly Kester and Kim Lamon-
Loperfido,
o Members Excused: Autumn Cox,Vibeke Talley
o Members Absent: Stephanie Boswell, Thomas Hardin
o Guest: Susan Bone, Ombudsman for Durham temporarily replacing Autumn Cox
OLD BUSINESS; Discussion Feb 1,2022 Minutes; reviewed and approved.
NEW BUSINESS
o Membership
• Member Absences: Jackie will f/u with each to determine current interest in remaining a
committee volunteer.
• Membership Numbers: We are at 7 members (excluding Ombudsman and Dept of Aging
representative; three vacancies.
• Orange County Volunteer Brochure for Recruiting: Copies of a brochure used by the
Wake County NHCAC was obtained by Martha at a regional meeting several years ago.
With little modification (county name change) she drafted a possible brochure to be used for
our committee's recruitment. Committee members agreed that it could be something useful
for us as numbers have dipped low in Orange County. The group raised several questions,
although none discouraged presenting the document to Autumn when she returns from her
leave. Questions included: Cost of printing; Who absorbed printing costs (Susan thought it
may have been the Area J group); How effective has it been for recruiting volunteers; What
involvement(if any) should the County Commissioners have in approving such a document.
A suggestion was made to distribute to former nurses who might be interested in providing
volunteer support. All will be placed on the next meeting's agenda.
o Ombudsman Report(Susan Bone, Ombudsman, Durham County, Ombudsman,
temporary replacement for Autumn Cox)
• Resuming Visits: Susan reported that the state has not yet approved the visits to nursing
homes by CAC volunteers at this time. She was unaware of any specific reasons.
• Autumn Cox will return from approved leave on June 1 and will be available for our next
scheduled meeting on August 2, 2022, 5:30pm, at a place yet to be determined.
• Orange County Business: While Susan's main focus on Durham County facilities, she
reported fielding calls from Orange County residents, families and facilities that were able to
be resolved through telephone conversation.
• Pre-admission Screening and Resident Review (PASRR)Program (details from the Website -
here. Susan had been working with one case with family members of a resident at an Orange
County long-term care facility. Committee members were eager to learn more about this
program and if/how it has worked in our area.

o Department on Aging (Kim Lamon-Loperfido)
• The Orange County Master Aging Plan is up for Community Review and local government
comment. Congratulations to all volunteers who worked so diligently to produce this
document. For the record, Kim provided the following from Janice Tyler,Director,
Department on Aging:
"I want to say thank you to the 150+ persons, including older adults, local
organizations, county departments and all the municipalities for joining us in
this grassroots planning effort. We have some exciting projects on the horizon
over the next five years.
"A big thank you also goes out to the seven workgroup leaders, interns, the
MAP Racial Equity team, the MAP Steering Committee, our Orange County
Advisory Board on Aging and a very special thank you to Cass Dictus and
Kenesha Wood for their outstanding support in helping get the MAP completed.
"A draft of the 2022-27 Master Aging Plan is available for public view on our
website with the final document being posted after it is presented to the Board of
County Commissioners in late May. To learn more about the MAP, view the
2022-27 MAP draft, and the matrix of our 2017-22 MAP past accomplishments
visit the Master Aging Plan online. To share your comments, please contact
me."
• Kim mentioned that further information regarding upcoming programs is available through
Senior Centers within the county
Reminders:
o Next Meeting: August 2, 2022, 5:30 pm-7pm. Committee members present asked to have a
face-to-face meeting with one another (environmental issues not withstanding) at the Senior
Center in Chapel Hill.
