PURPOSE: To designate the week of March 10-16, 2002 as Severe Weather Awareness
Week.
BACKGROUND: Governor Michael F. Easley has proclaimed the week of March 10-16, 2002
as Severe Weather Awareness Week. A statewide tornado drill will be held on March 13, 2002.
The drill consists of practice watches and warnings being issued by the National Weather
Service and broadcast to the public over radio and television stations. The purpose of the drill
is to heighten citizen awareness and allow their participation by practicing movements to safe
areas in their home or office. All county schools typically exercise their tornado plans during
this period.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board adopt the proclamation
designating the week of March 10-16, 2002, as Severe Weather Awareness Week in Orange
County, and encourage citizens to learn more about tornadoes.

SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK
March 10-16, 2002
WHEREAS, Governor Michael F. Easley has proclaimed the week of March 10-16, 2002 as
Severe Weather Awareness Week; and
WHEREAS, Orange County is vulnerable to severe weather, including the devastation of
tornadoes; and
WHEREAS, Tornadoes occur in North Carolina each year; and
WHEREAS, The need for citizens to learn more about tornadoes and how to protect
themselves should be emphasized;
NOW THEREFORE, The Board of County Commissioners hereby proclaim the week of March
10 through 16, 2002, as Severe Weather Awareness Week, and encourage all
citizens to learn more about tornadoes and be aware of the dangers of severe
weather, especially during the spring season.
Adopted this 6th day of March, 2002.
