PURPOSE: To consider a resolution to recognize the UNC Women's Soccer Team winning the
2003 NCAA Women's Challenge Cup.
BACKGROUND: On December 7, 2003, the UNC Women's Soccer team captured the NCAA
Women's Challenge Cup for its 18~' national title since 1981. This year's team, under the
guidance of Head Coach Anson Dorrance, completed a sweep of 6 NCAA shutouts to finish
with a 27-0 record, the best in the sport's history. The Board of County Commissioners wants
to recognize their outstanding victory and their inspiration to the youth of Orange County
through their athletic leadership and teamwork.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: NONE
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board adopt the attached
resolution recognizing the UNC Women's Soccer Team winning the 2003 NCAA Women's
College Cup.

RESOLUTION OF RECOGNITION ON
UNC WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM WINNING THE
2003 NCAA WOMEN'S COLLEGE CUP
WHEREAS, on December 7, 2003, the University of North Carolina Women's
soccer team captured the NCAA Women's College Cup; and,
WHEREAS, under the guidance of Head Coach Anson Dorrance, UNC earned its
18th national title since 1981; and,
WHEREAS, The Tar Heels completed a sweep of six NCAA shutouts to finish with
a 27-0 record, the best in the sport's history; and,
WHEREAS, the University of North Carolina women's soccer team and head
coach Anson Dorrance have placed Chapel Hill and Orange County on the
international soccer map; and
WHEREAS, soccer is an integral park of the social and athletic fabric of Orange
County; and
WHEREAS, the Soccer Symposium Task Force in its 2000 report to the Orange
County Commissioners found that over 4000 Orange County youths are involved
in organized soccer programs; and,
WHEREAS, the 2001 Parks and Recreation Bond issue ratified by voters included
funds to create a Soccer Superfund to finance additional fields to be dispersed
across the County to support and promote the sport of soccer;
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Orange County Board of
Commissioners expresses its sincere appreciation and recognition to the
University of North Carolina women's soccer team, both for their
outstanding achievements and for the inspiration provided by their athletic
leadership and teamwork, particularly to the youth of Orange County.
