PURPOSE: To consider one appointment to the Arts Commission.
BACKGROUND: There is one vacancy on the 11-member Orange County Arts Commission.
A recommendation has been received to appoint Ms, Annette Smith, of 201 Lexington Drive,
Chapel Hill, NC 27516 to the Arts Commission. She would serve a partial three-year term to
expire on March 31, 2005.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None
RECOMMENDATION(S): Consider making appointments to the Arts Commission as the
Board may decide.

The Orange County Arts Commission (OCAC) would like to
recommend the appointment of Annette Smith to the Orange County
Arts Commission board.
Ms. Smith has submitted a volunteer application to serve on the
OCAC advisory board. She resides in Chapel Hill,
Annette Smith has a background in arts education. Her experience
and interest in this area are a needed addition to our board,
We would like her to replace Nedra Bradsher, who resigned earlier
this year.

I have 18 years experience in arts administration. Most of my career has been focused
upon developing educational programming and advocacy work for arts education, My
most recent non-profit arts postion as Director of Education for the Durham Arts Council
ended in .June of 2002, I have directed very small organizations and worked on the
management team of very large organizations, 1 have strong skills in planning and policy
development, advocacy and program development. My career has also included work as
a contract consultant in grant and program development, and as a program evaluator for
the NC Arts Council. I now work for the City of Durham as a Grants writer and
administrator for Durham Parks and Recreation,

I have served as a Board Member and as Chair of the Board for the NC Alliance for Arts
Education. I have served on several advisory committees, most notably on the marketing
task force for the John F. Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Educaiton Network KCAAEN
(1995). I served on the nominations committee for the KCAAEN from 1993-1996, as
chair of the committee in 1995. I have represented arts educaiton an several statewide

the community and the public school system in an 11 county service area. Pro-gramming
