HomeMy WebLinkAboutOCAC minutes July 12, 2021 final ORANGE COUNTY ARTS COMMISSION July 12, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. Virtual Meeting - GoToMeeting Board Members present: Fred Joiner, Chair;Anita Mills, Vice-Chair, Delia Keefe, Secretary;Linda Williamson, Justin Haslett, Sean Bailey, Dan Mayer, Crystal Wu, Sarah Shore, Marlon Torres, Lindsay Metivier, Brad Porter, John Bemis, Krista Bremer, Hannah Fatool Board Members absent: Staff Present.• Katie Murray, Executive Director 1) Fred called the meeting to order at 6:40pm. 2) Fred moved to approve the June minutes with corrections. Dan seconded. The minutes were approved. 3) Director's Report: a) Paint it Orange This event will take place in person this year. The Hillsborough Arts Council will not be a partner in this event. The commission will handle it. Volunteers will be needed to hang the exhibit, most likely in October. b) Eno Mill Update Katie proposed having Eno Mill events on the 1st Friday of the month. A discussion of pros and cons followed. Construction is wrapping up this week and movers are coming the first week of August. Our September meeting should be in person. Gallery exhibits will begin around October and classes should begin before that. c) OCAA The strategic planning process is ongoing with Carl Baumann. Katie has proposed to her boss that the OCAA, (as the fundraising arm), handle the revenue piece of the mill. This would include items such as class registration fees and checks to artists. d) Grants Update 57% of the project grant applicants are first-time applicants. 1/4 of the grassroots applicants are new. 4) Restart the Arts Grants The rules here are very vague. We can decide how to spend this money. Katie stated that she is not in favor of putting a lot of requirements on usage. Discussion followed. Points raised included that the funds should be use for programming, not for deficits. Continued evaluation will be needed after looking at the pool of applicants. Katie will work on this. 5) Liaison Reports a) UNC Student Liaison Report Hannah plans to reach out to many arts groups on campus. b) Chapel Hill Arts Commission The commission is rethinking events and festivals in Chapel Hill. c) UNC Movies Under the Stars is taking place this summer at the Forest Theater. d) Hillsborough Arts Council Last Fridays have been really great over the summer. e) The ArtsCenter There will be a Paperhand show in August. A preview for the OCAG tour will be at the ArtsCenter in October. The ArtsCenter is looking for a marketing director. f) Carrboro Arts Carrboro Arts is hoping to open at the Town Hall in September. g) Visitor's Bureau Tourism is increasing. h) OCAG Members are working on the tour. It will be in person. 6) Round table updates Art on the Hill has a new name "Beacon" Fred adjourned the meeting at 7:57pm. Respectfully submitted, Delia Keefe, OCAC Secretary
