Board Members present: Fred Joiner, Chair; Anita Hill, Vice Chair;
Delia Keefe, Secretary; Dan Mayer, Linda Williamson, Justin Haslett,
Matthew Keith, Bronwyn Merritt, Marlon Torres, Sean Bailey, Brad Porter,
Tim Hoke, Tinka Jordy, Marcela Slade
Board Members absent: Krista Bremer
Staff Present: Katie Murray, Executive Director; Emilie Menzel, Assistant
I. Fred called the meeting to order at 6:33pm.
II. Tim moved to approve the December 2020 minutes. Dan seconded.
III. Advisory Board Update
a. The board continued discussing the Conflict of Interest
Policy that began at the December meeting. Our policies are
those of the greater county. Many points were raised. Both
board members and County Commissioners cannot apply for
these grants. This applies only to individual artists. There are
still many questions that need answers. The commission
should work to assist artists in finding other resources.
As a board, we need to listen to the artists in our community
and identify the areas that need our support.
b. There will be four upcoming vacant board positions in March.
Several candidates are being considered. Tim made a motion,
and Anita seconded, to approve John Bemis as a board member.
The motion was approved.
IV. Director's Report:
a. WRAL Big Night in for the Arts
Five counties - Orange, Durham, Wake, Chatham, and Cumberland
counties - will be involved. Individual and corporate sponsorships
are needed.
b. Eno Mill
There are two vacancies in the mill studios. Let Katie know
if you know of artists needing space. Katie met with Frank
and Alice at the mill to discuss additional space that is
becoming available. Possibilities for use of the space include
children's theater, live music, theater, and opportunities for
visual artists as well.
c. Art on the Hill
Katie is considering applying for an NEA grant for Art
on the Hill.
V. Liaison Reports
a. UNC Student Liaison
Students start classes remotely on January 191h. In-person
classes are scheduled for February Bch
b. Chapel Hill Arts Commission
c. Hillsborough Arts Council
The executive director has resigned. Doris has also resigned.
They may have to return grant money.
d. The ArtsCenter
The ArtsCenter is working on board diversity and is
hiring in several positions.
e. Carrboro Arts
f. Visitor's Bureau
g. OCAG
Marcella moved to adjourn the meeting. Linda seconded.
Fred adjourned the meeting a 7:43pm.
