PURPOSE: To provide the Board of Commissioners with an update on the third annual Youth
Voices Summer Leadership Training Institute,
BACKGROUND: In .luly 2005, Orange County implemented its third annual Summer
Leadership Training Institute for area youth. This program, administered by Cooperative
Extension, is a collaborative effort between the County Manager's Office, Human Rights &
Relations, Cooperative Extension and Triangle United Way. For the past three years,
approximately 15 students have spent five weeks of their summer vacation in a program that
provides them with an opportunity to:
a) Build leadership;
b) Demonstrate community service;
c) Collaborate with community and government services; and
d) Develop a tangible end project for the Orange County community.
Two graduates from the program, Dawn Boudwin and Kevin Shuford, will be in attendance to
present their report and answer questions.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with receiving the update,
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board receive the update for
informational purposes,
