BACKGROUND: In 1999, the Hillsborough Exchange Club appointetl a special committee to explore the neetl far child abuse prevention and educeficn services in the county. Opening in April 2001, the Hillsborough Exchange Club Family Center la [ha reaull of that slutly. The Center's mission is to enhance positive parenting by provitling educational antl euppoNVe progrerns Mat builtl upon the sbenglhe of ourfemilies end our community. The Center offers services geared toward the prevention of cMld abuse inGUtling • Information and Referral - eeaialance to help local residents access community resources serving families, children antl atlolescenta. • Community Awareness-educational presentations to schools. civic organ¢ations, places of worship,businesses. antl other community groups to inrsease awareness of child abuse issues. Parenting Courses- parenting etlucation clasaea ere available to parents to team how [o • atltlress sensitive teen issues and how to maintain open communication with Neir children. Parent Alde Project- provitles supportive and etlucaticnal intervention services through the • use of 4ainep parent aide volunteers. • Volunteer Recruitment Registrarion-oRers opportundies for community re~ident~bget involvetl with the Center s child abuse prevention antl etlucation egotls. z Tha Hillsborough Exchange Club Family Center recently entered into an agreement with the Orange County Department of Soclal5ervices (DSSJ whereby DBS caseworkers may refer clients to the Renter's Parent Aide Program. Parent Aitles are trelnetl,professionally aupervisetl volunteers who assist parents antler stress antl those parents whose chiltlren are at nsk of abuse or neglect. Parent Aides work directly in tha client's home serving as parent atlvocatas and positive role models, o8en meking a crhical difference in enabling parents to succeed. AppmPdete refertals from DSS would inrAuda: 1. Reportsaf allegetl abuse/neglect which cannot be aubatantla[etl yet have the potential for abuse/neglect antl/or the family needs immetlia[e support. 2. Aprotective services rase, whichhas receivetl services antl no longerneeds DSS support, but may neetl same continuetl support to prevent a rewrrence of abuselnaglect. 3. An open case that has been tletertbineG to be appropdale for Hillabomugh Exchange Club Family Canter intervention.
