BACKGROUND: In the FY 2001-2002 butlget, footle tofaling $40,000 were eennerketl to reduce the County's waiting list for families in neetl of chiltl care services. To tlate, them are 2]2 preschool children (ages OS)who ere on the waiting list This is an unduplicaletl cembinetl count of those chiltlren who are on either the waiting Ilat for sevlces at the Department of Social Services or Child Cam Services Association. Representatives fiom the County ManageYa Office. Department of Sotlal Services, Orenge County Partnership for Voung chiltlren, antl Chill Care Services Association have met b develop a plan far eddressinq this issue. The chiltl Care Scholarship Fund is pmposetl tp raise fundsto aupportthe needs of low-income wodirg families for quality child care. This will enable families m have opporwnitiea for employment while their cMltlren beneFlt hom [he experiences of a quality eatly childhootl etlucetional experience that ensures their school readiness. The Chlltl Care Scholarship Fund is sponsored by the collaborative effort of Orange County Government. Omnge County Departnent of Social Services. Orange County Partnership for Voung chiltlren (OCPVCj, and Child Care Services Association. The campaign goal is to raise $100,000. The OCPYC will provide fiswloversight of the scholarship campaign. For at least the first year, funds donated to fha campaign will be aubwntreded to Child Care Services Associs0an. ' The County'swntribution of$40,000 is provitletl asachallenge gran[to the community. This contribution will fund approximately l5 families. Although all of these families are extremely _ z poor (the metllan Family income is $15,600). Child Care Services Assoclatlon will serve the moat neatly working families w@h the lowest family income. In atldition lc the County's contribution, Duke Power has awartletl the OCPVC $5,000 which will be used to challenge the business sector. Also, $9,900 of in-kintl comdbutlona from the child care community has been reisetl tc support the Chlld Care Scholarship FUntl. Thus far, nine child care providsre have agreetl [o contribute two weeks of their services kr participating families to offse[Meto*al cost of cafe.
