PURPOSE: To provide notice of atljus[ment in salary for the Sheriff antl Register of Deetls
positions
BACKGROUND: As aulhorizetl by the North Carolina General S[eMes 153A-92 and the
Orange County Personnel Ordinance, the Boertl of Commissioners may atljus[ salaries,
allowances antl other compensation for the Sheriff and Register of Deeds positions. The
Board of Commissioners must give notice of intention for atllustment no later than 14 tlays
bafom[he last day for filing notice of candidacy for the office. That date is January ], 2002.
Attached is a tlraft resolution with the proposetl notice of atljushnent in salary for the above
elected officials. Following [he election and after the aumessful cantlidate takes oPoCe, the
Commissioners retain the right to atljust the minimum starting salary upwaN in accordance
with fie years of reletatl experience held by the suwcssful cantlidate
The proposed starting salary for the Sheriffs position is Step 1 of Salary Gratle 80 of the
Orange County ClssaRrstion antl Pay Plan. The current Step 1 salary is $57,938.
The proposetl starting salary Por the Register of Deeds' poshion is Step 1 of Salary Grzde ]8
of the Orange Gounry Classification end Pay Plan. The cunenl Step 1 salary Is $52,554.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None
RECOMMENDATION(SI: The Manager recommentls that the Board atlop[the attached
Resolution.

Resolution Giving Noti<e To All Candidates For The
Register of Deeds antl Sheriff Positions
In Orange County
The Orenge County Boats of Commissioners, as authorized by North Carolina General
Statutes 153A-92, has set the stoning salaries for the Sheriff antl Register of Oeetle positions
as provitletl below. This will affect the intlivitluals electetl to these offices when they take
office. All other compensation elemen5 inclutling expense allowances are as set forth in the
Orange County Personnel OMinance.
The starting salary for fhe Sheriffs position will be Step 1 of Salary Grade 80 in the
Orange County Classification antl Pay Plen. The Step 7 salary is $57,938.
• The staling salary for the Register of Oeeds positlon will be Step 1 of Salary Gretla 78 in
fhe Oange County Classifwtion antl Pay Plan. The Step t salary is $52,554.
This Resolution will not be altered or amentletl until after the pereone eleMetl Sheriff antl
Register of Oeeds in [he 2002 election for those positions take office. Thereaffeq the eoartl
of Commissioners may atllust the starting salary of [he cantlitlate elected considering the
years of service antl performance in reletetl experience of the person elected.
