PURPOSE: To prowtle a schedule of important events antl aspeMS of the process leading to the
Gamprehensive Plen update.
BACKGROUND: The Comprehensive Plan has no[ been thoreughly uptlaletl since 1981. Since
eatly 2001, census data has been analyzed to update base dertrogrephic Infomtafign.
Sustainability goals ea well as Shaping Orange Counlys Future report has been tlevebped to help
guide the direction of future lantl use goal, ob~ectivea, and policies.
The attachetl schedule outlines milestones leatling to fudher tlevelopmem and public oubeach of
the plan. Staff is inveatiga[ing Mro software programs that assist In long range aantl use antl policy
implicetipa Products such as'GOmmunity Viz' and What iP develop interective scenarios that
sestet in tlecision making.
As a separate subject, the Planner III who will anchorthe comprehensive plan endeavor has not
been hired since the hiring process is ongoing but hopefully nearing closure over the next few
weeks. Background research is being tlone by Gene Bell. Planner ill, Aarcn Cain, Planner II end
Craig Benedict, Planning Dlrectoq as preliminary work mwaNS awelereting the acenatlo crea0on
progress.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None at this time.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Menagenecommends that the SOaM receive the report.
