SUBJECT: 2027 World University Games Update

PURPOSE: To receive information and an update on North Carolina's progress in the
bid process for the 2027 World University Games, an event of the International University
Sports Federation (FISU).
BACKGROUND: The North Carolina Bid Committee (NCBC) is working to bring the
world's largest event for student-athletes to North Carolina and specifically the Triangle
area. In recent months, the NCBC has received requests for presentations to local groups
interested in the bid and prospects for the Games. The NCBC has presented to the
Durham Sports Commission (DSC) Board of Directors, the North Carolina Travel and
Tourism Board, the Planning and Legislative Committee of GoTriangle, and the Cary
Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no immediate financial impact related to this discussion.
SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: The following Orange County Social Justice Goal is
applicable to this item:
• GOAL: ENABLE FULL CIVIC PARTICIPATION
Ensure that Orange County residents are able to engage government through
voting and volunteering by eliminating disparities in participation and barriers to
participation.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: There is no Orange County Environmental Responsibility
Goal impact related to this discussion.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board receive this
information.
