PURPOSE: To approve a Proclamation declaring November, 20111 as Treea of Strength Month
in Orange County.
BACKGROUND: The Orerge County Center-North Carolina Cooperative Extension antl the
Extension Master GaNener program developed the Trees of Stength progmm es a means In
Orange County M recognize those whose lives were lost through the temotlat acts of September
11, 2001. The progrem will also serve as a means M educate the public on proper tree
selection, planting antl maintenance.
As a result of this Orange County initiative, Me program is anenlly being developetl as a state
level Extension program for all Nodh Camlina counties.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: These is no financial impact associatetl with approval of the
procamation.
RECOMMENDATIONIS): The Menagar recommends Mat the BOaM approve Me proclamation
tleGaring November, 2001 as Treea of Strength Month in Orenge County.

TREES OF STRENGTH MONTH
WHEREAS, Orange County, the state, nation antl wotltl mourn Ne loss of
thousentls of people who died in Me tragedies of September 11, 2001; antl
WHEREAS, Oange County reagn¢es the need to honor the heroic actions
taken by firefighters and police officers on September 11, antl always; and
WHEREAS, aervlce men antl women from Orange County have been deployetl
to pmtect antl tlefentl our nation antl many more stantl reatly M tlo so; antl
WHEREAS, trees have long been seen as an endutlng symbol of Ilfe antl
renewal; and
WHEREAS, trees enhance the appearance of our communttles; increase
properly value; provitle food and shelter for wiltllfie; retluce energy casts, sail
erosion and storm-water runoR; and, thus enhance our mental antl physical well-
being;and
WHEREAS, Orenge County's Master GaMener Volunteers and North Carolina
Cooperative Extension -Orange County Center etlucators are helping citizens
plant trees as an enduting remintlerof those lost September 11 antl tc honor
those who protect antl tlefentl us, es well as a means to celebrate our unhy as a
nation:
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE ORANGE COUNTY BOARD
OF COMMISSIONERS do hereby proclaim November, 2001 as "Rees of
Strength Monty' in Orenga County, anQUrge all cozens to commend Chia
observation.
