PURPOSE: To proclaim Ne month of Otlpber as Domestic Vblence Awareness Month.
BACKGROUND: The GOVemor has proclaimetl October as Domestic Violence Awareness
Month in North Carolina. The Orange County Ccmmisaion for Women, fie Women's Center,
[he Rape Crisis Center antl the Omnge County Family Viclence Prevention Center are
sponsoring the "March far Justice" cantllelight vigil on October 18" at 8:00 p. m. The march will
begin at the Women's Center in Chapel Hill antl antl at the poet offira- Other activities inclutle
self-tlefenae workshops, an Information booth atthe State Fair, a Billbpartl Campaign by the
North Carolina Coalition Against Domestk Violence and women's empowerment wwkahopa
and seminars across the Triangle.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the BOeM etlopt the ProrAametlon
antl authorize the Chair to sign it.

WHEREAS, domestic violence, once a secret kept among families, Is now recognizetl as
serious come in our cemmunily, end
WHEREAS, domestic violence has severe consequences far survivors, their children antl
families antl impacts on the qualRy of lBe of [he entlre mmmuntty; antl
WHEREAS, stopping the cycle of thle come requlree not only [he resolve and wurage of
survivors, but also support and involvement from all of us; and
WHEREAS, enhanced etlucation, prevention and intervention help increase public
awareness of the severity antl extent of tlomeatic violence; and
WHEREAS, violence in the home Is a problem that affects every socioeconomic level in c
society, occurring in wealthy antl tlisatlvaMage neighborhoods and involving the employed ai
unemployed; end
WHEREAS, tlomeatic violence is generally leametl antl paaaetl tlown from one generetic
to another, end
WHEREAS, our society pays ahigh pdcefar domestk violence through homelessness,
increasetl crime rates, dmg and alcohol abuse, increasetl medical expenses and business
losses; and
WHEREAS, during the month of October, local, state and national domestlc violence
agencies will sponsor events to help us fxus public attention on the problem of tlomestic
violence;

Commission for Woman, the Family Violence Prevention Center of Orange County, the
Women's Center antl the Rape Crisis Center.
