Board Members present: Fred Joiner, Chair;Delia Keefe, Secretary;Dan Mayer,

Board Members absent: Tinka Jordy, Anita Mills, Bronwyn Merritt
Staff Present: Katie Murray, Executive Director; Emilie Menzel,Assistant
I. Fred called the meeting to order at 6:33pm.
II. Brad moved to approve the September 2020 minutes. Krista seconded.
III. Advisory Board Update
a. Welcome to new board members Sean Bailey and Matthew Keith.
b. We need to appoint a new liaison from the board to the
Chapel Hill/Orange County Tourism Board
IV. Director's Report:
a. Orange County Arts Support Fund
This is ongoing with the WHUP 50150 drive. One half
of the proceeds will be used to support musicians in the
county.
b. Grants program update
Contracts will be going out tomorrow for grassroots and
progress grants. Katie is working with the ArtsCenter to
align applications for the schools. The roster will be set
around the first of the month. 3-5 board members will
need to serve on the panel for Arts in Education. The
school system should have paid the ArtsCenter for its
service in the fall and spring. Katie will notify them
regarding this issue.
c. Paint it NC
This is a virtual event involving artists from the mountains
to the beach. Painters may include up to 5 paintings. Early
preview tickets can be purchased from OCAC and the
Hillsborough Arts Council for $25. Sales will be handled by
the artists.
d. NC Cares for the Arts Grant Program
These grants, made available by the state, are open
October 12—30 to nonprofits, businesses, and individuals.
Details are being worked out. We need panel reviewers for this.
V. Grant Review
a. Operations Support Grant Applications
This $50k from the county commissioners is to support
nonprofit arts in the county, following the state guidelines
for grassroots. After discussion, the board voted to cap the
grants at $5000 and to accept Katie’s recommendations
for allocation.
b. Arts Educator Grant Applications
$2000 has been budgeted for this and will be used for
professional development. The applicants are educators in
theater arts, visual art, and music. All applicants will be funded.
VI. Liaison Reports
a. UNC Student Liaison
There is a link to the UNC feeder page for zoom productions,
stage readings and plays, and music.
b. Chapel Hill Arts Commission
c. Hillsborough Arts Council
d. The ArtsCenter
Online classes are in session. There is a new team at the
ArtsCenter – a new deputy director and director of youth
programs. Plans are to hire someone for the capital
campaign. Goals are sited on racial equity and being more
inclusive. Artist Jermaine Powell has painted
a new mural on the wall of Gray Squirrel Coffee.
e. Carrboro Arts
Check the town website for information.
f. Visitor’s Bureau
The Colonial Inn in Hillsborough will host a soft opening
in November. A new rep from the board is needed.
g. OCAG
The 2020 tour is virtual with in-person studio visits by
appointment only.
VII. Advocacy/Other updates
West End Poetry Festival in Carrboro is this weekend.
