They have each expressed interest in reappointment for additional terms, have demonstrated satisfactory attendance during their service on the board, and have been active members of the HRC. Additionally, the HRC recommends David LaBarre to fill an At-Large Position and Ellis Driver to fill an At-Large Position. David LaBarre has expressed continued interest in being a member of the HRC. His application demonstrates that he has experience working with a variety of people and is familiar with strategic planning and policy, which can be helpful in upcoming work of the HRC. David’s professional and personal background also provide a perspective that is currently lacking from the HRC. Ellis Driver exhibits expansive connections to community groups and demonstrates a passion and commitment to social justice and equity through their work They have also shown interest by researching the past programming of the HRC and have taken the time to understand the goals and priorities. Ellis’s experience is sure to bring a voice from a perspective that currently is not represented on the HRC. I have a family of teachers, some of who are union activists in NC and have taught me worlds about the fragile state of public schools in NC before and during COVID. I am a long-time member of the OC Beekeepers Association and am otherwise tuned into the dire state of protecting our beautiful OC landscape and environment. More importantly, I want to help uplift our citizens in vulnerable populations from the dangerous health and socioeconomic consequences of pollution and environmental destruction. I am not sure how relevant this is, but I have a BFA in Studio Art and a BS in Biology and professionally I am an entomologist. I have worked for several years to finally make measurable strides pushing myÂ employer to be more trans-friendly and am currently working toward moving my career into data science and analytics. Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: I love Orange County and everything that living here has taught me and currently find myself in a position to give back. I saw the Social Justice Goals of the HRC of Orange County and found them to be truly aligned with my own goals and would love to serve the county where I live in working toward equity, safety, and dignity for everyone here. I know we have a large wealth gap in income and school funding/performance/inclusions and we are currently in an economic and health crisis. I want to assist in every way I can to promote life- saving policies throughout and after COVID, all without losing sight of our historic and persistent need to fight the racial and other inequity in OC. I am good at parsing large amounts of information and do not make decisions until I have sought and found solid input and context for them. I am very concerned about what walls are in the way of marginalized folks participating in local government and how to break them down, and it sounds like the HRC is as well. I am also tickled that the HRC is the commission that presents the Pauli Murray awardâ€”I have been to nearly every Pauli Murray event at various churches and put on by the Pauli Murray Center/Pauli Murray Project as I am a tremendous fan of her. Her legacy is close to my heart as a North Carolinian, as a trans person as an anti-racist, and as a past attendee of the Chapel of the Cross on UNC campus. I believe in redistributing resources and lifting up and amplifying marginalized voices. I am always looking to meet more people across my community and believe that intergenerational and generally diverse and genuine relationships are the only thing that can save us from being divided and inequitable. I do think being transgender and entrenched in the local transgender community has given me a unique perspective, and the long struggle of advocating for myself at jobs or in life has given me a lot of empathy for how advocating against oneâ€™s own oppressions is almost impossibly taxing and difficult. I am determined to carry what weight of this burden I can responsibly take from other marginalized folks. A couple examples of this would be that a) my job of 100k+ employees in the US does not employ any trans women (which is an issue in and of itself) and thus I was the only person to point out that their health insurance coverage for trans women only covers sterilization and none of the most-sought medical treatments. Public acknowledgement led to action on this. b) earlier this year I had a great conversation with the OC Partnership toÂ End Homelessness to submit a complaint to HUD about how they were erasing transgender homeless folks by making them choose between M, F, or transgender. This complaint was at least new to the folks to which I spoke, but HUD has for years been making binary trans people choose between their real gender and the label â€œtransgenderâ€ which has erased unknown numbers of trans folks from our national data on homelessness. c) after attempting filling out the census on census day, the day after Trans Day of Visibility, I found that you could avoid answering the gender question and still submit the census. I have also worked within depressed regions with people who are underrepresented and have little resources. i.e. people with disabilities, gender-based violence, alcohol and substance abuse prevention among youth, community policing. Contribution to the diversity of viewpoints on this board: I want to serve because I have a responsibility as a member of this community to further the work of ensuring quality of life through public health and prevention. My career has deeply embedded roots in public health issues, such as alcohol and substance abuse prevention, gender-based violence prevention, homelessness, poverty eradication, and even waste management and sanitation to name a few. I often have used epidemiological prevention models to increase awareness to a problem and moving communities toward being more active in collaborative problem solving. 35
