PURPOSE: To consider an agreement renewal to receive $50,000 from the University of North
Carolina (UNC) Hospitals for its co-sponsorship of the Department on Aging's Senior Wellness
Program from July 1, 2003 through June 30, 2004.
BACKGROUND: In 1994, the Friends of the Chapel Hill Senior Center received funding to
implement a Wellness Program at each of the Orange County Senior Centers and rural
community centers. This three-year project funded by the Kate B. Reynolds Foundation ended
June 30, 1997. Due to the success of the program, UNC Hospitals proposed to fund the
Wellness Coordinator position through contractual agreement with Orange County. This
renewal will maintain existing programs and assist implementing new programs to promote the
health and well-being of seniors, such as community education, fitness, screenings and flu
shots. The United Way will also continue to provide operating expense support for this
public/private partnership.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: UNC Hospitals will reimburse Orange County up to $50,000 for the
salary and fringe benefits for the permanent full-time Senior Public Health Educator that directs
the Wellness Program. United Way and class revenues cover operating expenses.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends approval and the Chair to sign the
Agreement renewal between UNC Hospitals and Orange County for the continuation of the
Wellness Program.
