January 13, 2020 at 6:30 p.m.

Board Members present: Fred Joiner, Chair; Delia Keefe, Secretary;
Dan Mayer, Linda Williamson, Marcela Slade, Marlon Torres,
Rachael Despard, Tim Hoke, Chris Kubica, Ashley Nissler, Doris
Friend, Bronwyn Merritt
Board Members absent: Tinka Jordy, Anita Mills, Justin Haslett
Staff Present: Katie Murray, Executive Director
L Fred called the meeting to order at 6:34 p.m.
II. Tim moved to approve the November 2019 minutes. Ashley
seconded.
III. Executive Committee Report:
a. Renewing members:
i. Dan Mayer (2nd term expires 3/31/2023)
ii. Marlon Torres (2nd term expires 3/31/2023)
iii. Tinka Jordy (1 year extension: expires 3/3 1/21)
b. Not renewing:
i. Chris Kubica
c. Rotating off.
i. Ashley Nissler (to become Secretary of Council board)
d. Board needs:
i. The board is in need of 2 new members
e. Nominations go to Katie or member of the Executive
Committee
IV. Director's Report:
a. Board members are asked to sign up for 2020 Arts Moment
introductions.
b. Katie is hiring an assistant. A strong candidate will be detail
oriented, have marketing skills, and be involved in events.
This position will be temporary
to start and will be 20-30 hours.
c. Eno Mill Project. Tours were given and applications were
reviewed. It was determined that improvements were needed
and have been made (carpet ripped up,
ventilation fan installed, walls added). Applications will be
opened again and more tours will be given. Reviews will be
made by the end of February. Ten artists
are needed. Move in date is projected for March 15th. It is
important to note that the Mill is supplementing but not
competing with the Arts Center.
d. Art on the Hill. Tinka will be the board representative. The
proposal has changed. The event will take place in the
downtown area of all three towns during the
summer. It will be both indoors and outdoors and will be a
month long. Someone will need to be hired to plan this
event. Giving a stipend to each artist is a goal.
e. Children's Theater. Katie is looking for seed funding and a
director. Staff positions would be paid. These would include
dance, vocal, and theater instructors,
and an administrative organizer. Tuition would be charged.
V. Liaison Reports:
a. UNC Student Liaison Update. Rachel emailed UNC updates
to the board. Students began the new semester on Jan. gtn
b. Hillsborough Arts Council. The gallery and gift shop are
doing very well. The Solstice event was a grand success and
will be a feature story in Our State next winter.
The annual report was filed. The concert series is starting up.
c. The Arts Center. Summer camp flyers are ready. The gallery
artist is a faculty member of NC Central. The Elf Market set
a record. The Arts Center is looking for
a deputy director. This will be a full time, permanent, senior
management position. The new Arts Center project is
moving forward.
Upcoming dates.
Commission/Council Exec Committee Meeting - Monday, Jan. 27 at
6:30pm. Location TBD
Arts Day 2020 - Tuesday May 19 & Wed May 20. All day. Raleigh
Board participation in Arts Day is important.
