Introductions and Announcements a. Peggy Cohn, former member & chair, recently fell and broke her wrist. We send her our best for a speedy recovery 2. Approval of Minutes— December 10, 2019 a. Janice share (d) next to last page. Approved, with the correction to two typos and adding Jeff Charles to the list of Board Members Present 3. Any other Agenda items a. None Director's Report 4. Staff updates a. New Passmore Center Front Desk Manager i. The position has been filled. Amanda High is the new Passmore Center Front Desk Manager. She is a County employee who came to us from DEAPR 5. Project EngAGE Class Five has graduated 14 new members who completed 13 weeks of training totaling over 70 hours. 6. Mark Your Calendar for upcoming events a. Breaking the Silence and Shedding the Stigma — I'm Good Bro: Unmasking Black Male Depression - Feb. 6, 6-8:30 pm, Passmore Center b. Intergenerational Sweet Heart Social — Feb. 8, 12 noon —2 pm, Cedar Grove Community Center. c. I Voted! Now What? Policy and Advocacy Panel — Feb. 19, 3:30—5 pm, Seymour Center d. Alternate Endings: An End of Life Choices Event— Feb. 5, 4-6 pm, Seymour Center Continuing Business 7. Seymour Center Renovation Update a. Myra updated the board on the Seymour construction project. After 9 months, we received the building permits from the Town of Chapel Hill. During the next couple of weeks, the power grid and sidewalk/property boundary will be updated but will not cause power outage to the building during normal business hours. The board suggested talking with the Town of Chapel Hill about delays in permitting?Jeff suggested that the board specifically address the issue as seniors bare the cost and hardship and present our concerns to the Chapel Hill Town Manager. James shared his experience, stating that permit applications must be followed to the letter or delays will result. New Business 8. Budget Kick-off for FY 20-21 a. Flat budget this year unless departments find new revenue streams. No new money or positions. Increases in employees' retirement fund. Living wage to go up to $15. More of the sales tax revenue went up from 10%to 12.2%. County employee health insurance is not changing or going up. We are grateful to Carol Woods for their charitable gift to support the work of the MAP, we couldn't do what we do without it. b. Review of Outside Agency Applications i. Dick, Vibeke and Tiketha volunteered to review and score the applications. Janice will get the applications on January 31. She will send the applications to the volunteers and coordinate a meeting for the review process. The score cards are due back in March. 9. Review of NC Senior Tar Heel Legislature Priorities and input for new initiatives a. Dick did not receive any feedback after last meeting with recommendation of what the Legislature should focus on. He proposed that the Board put together something specific on the following topics: i. End of Life ii. Senior Housing, housing preservation, repairs & maintenance iii. Homestead Exemption Act— Do something about residents being forced out or marginalized because taxes continue to increase iv. Food insecurity v. Advocate against the trend of segregated, locked units, for those with memory/cognitive issues (Note: the board was divided on this some for, some against ) b. Dick will get the forms and work on writing up issues 2017-22 Master Aging Plan 10. MAP Steering Committee—Jan. 31 from 9-11 a.m. Carol Woods Retirement Community everyone is invited 11. Second Quarter (Oct/Nov/Dec) MAP Workgroup Updates a. Outdoor Spaces and Buildings Accomplishments i. Use of Outdoor Space is encouraged by increased advertising and planning of outdoor activities by OCDoA, CH & CARR Parks and Recreation ii. Parks and outdoor spaces are highlighted in conjunction with Nature Walks organized by the OCDoA and an Active Outdoor Programs section has been created for the Senior Times including programs provided in collaboration with OC DEAPR, Carrboro, and Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Challenges iii. A volunteer work group focused on advocacy for outdoor spaces iv. At least one bus stop in each town is converted into a Wellness Stop and/or integrated garden b. Social Participation and Inclusion Accomplishments i. More programs offered in Spanish only and other bi/tri lingual languages (English, Mandarin, or Spanish) ii. Increase in programs offered and community partnerships to reach Intergenerational, Mental Health education and LGBTQ communities iii. Seymour Center construction began for expansion of programs Challenges iv. A "Senior Center Without Walls" pilot program is being researched to reach "home bound" older adults v. Advocates/liaisons with the Refugee and Immigrant community c. Communications and Information Accomplishments i. Established new and/or closer relationships with local radio (WHUP-Hillsborough) and newspaper outlets (The News of Orange County and The Local Reporter) resulting in improved outreach ii. Working with Communications Intern to improve outreach through social media and local radio: Targeted Facebook campaign, Search Engine Optimization project and WHUP-Hillsborough interviews iii. Key words and terms have been updated and/or added to our webpages to improve search engine results iv. Placed Department ads on all 13 OUT buses , rotating ad topics quarterly Challenges: v. Staff and volunteer time spent manually duplicating or manipulating information from our registration system (RecTrac) for use on our online events calendar and digital monitors vi. Keeping up with the volume of programs and events needing promotion in multiple venues Committee Progress Reports if needed: 12. Dementia Friendly Business Campaign a. Shout-out to DFB partners in the Jan/Feb issue of Chapel Hill Magazine b. DFB campaign featured on the Department on Aging Facebook page 13. Senior Tar Heel Legislature— Dick White (see 9.a. & 9.b.) 14. Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee—Tiketha Collins a. No report—the committee has not met since the last Board meeting 15. Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee—Vibeke Talley a. No report—the committee has not met since the last Board meeting 16. Housing— Keith Cook/Dick White a. Continue to address challenges on evictions, health care issues losing their houses, taxes, etc. 17. Friends of the Passmore Center a. Fri., Jan. 17, 10:30-11:30 am —Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. — Free program featuring historian, Danita Mason-Hogans, b. Sat., April 18, 6-10 pm— Las Vegas Night— Everyone is encouraged to volunteer or buy a ticket to attend.Tiketha volunteered to help 18. Friends of the Seymour Center a. New logo & marketing materials, committee strong and promoting membership, fundraising and programs 19.
