4. Staff updates
a. Annie Deaver's last day— February 14. We are sad to see her go but wish her well.
b. Aging Transitions Administrator position has been posted and closed. Interviews tomorrow,
Feb. 12. Vibeke will be on the interview team. Interviewing 3 candidates (2 internal). 3
interviews, 2 internal candidates.
c. New interns
i. CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) intern —Cindy Bucy. Cindy is connected with UNC
Health Care and has been involved with community for years.
ii. NCCU Therapeutic Recreation Interns— Marquetta Edwards and Kyra Colson. One intern
will be working with Latonya, one with Cyd. The 40 hour internships are much needed.
iii. Partnerships in Aging Interns—Annelise Slater-In Praise of Age and Eva Bauer-
Communications. Working with both to do a summer practicum as well.
5. NC Association on Aging Annual Conference— March 5-6
b. Three presentations by OCDoA: Project EngAGE, Dementia Friendly Business Campaign, and
Ryan Lavalley will present his dissertation findings on, "Occupations of a Living Community:
Social Transformation of a Senior Center Welcoming Spanish-Speaking Older Adult Immigrants."

a. Breaking the Silence and Shedding the Stigma — I'm Good Bro: Unmasking Black Male
Depression— Rescheduled for Feb. 13 6-8:30 p.m. Passmore Center
b. I Voted! Now What? Policy and Advocacy Panel — Feb. 19 3:30—5 p.m. Seymour Center (Dick on
the panel)
c. Faith Based Outreach Quarterly Breakfast— March 3—9-11 a.m. UNC Healthcare— Hillsborough
Campus (Census presentation)
Continuing Business
7. Seymour Center Renovation Update— Parking continues to be a problem, especially now with VITA and
early voting. Per our construction agreement we will always keep 102 parking spaces, but they will be
moving around during construction. Asking staff to park at SHSC. September inside construction
begins. Completion date: Nov. 19
8. Seymour Center— Early Voting Site and Passmore Center— New Election Day Precinct voting site.
a. The new Passmore precinct will be in the back half of the great hall and will bring in a lot of new
visitors.
New Business
9. Budget FY 20-21
a. Due on Monday, flat budget, if we need anything we will have to move money from existing
accounts.
b. Review of Outside Agency Applications
i. Still have not received the applications. As soon as Janice gets them she will contact
Vibeke, Taketha & Dick for review.
c. Need a delegate for the TJCOG —Area Agency on Aging board to replace Ed Tiryakian. Ed is
resigning to focus on his Dying Right NC work. Ed will continue going to the quarterly meetings
until a replacement is found. The format is an info exchange and is beginning to be more active
in advocacy. Great opportunity to learn about legislation and the counties in TJCOG-AAA. The
board was asked to consider volunteering as a delegate or to recommend someone. Suggested
that Project EngAGE graduates might be interested. Janice will check with them.

11. Second Quarter (Oct/Nov/Dec) MAP Workgroup Updates
a. Housing Preservation / Home Repair- Ryan
i. Handy Helpers increased the number of jobs. In the past HH completed 23 jobs per year
up to 35 as of Feb. 2020. Predicting 105 at 50 different homes this year. Finding funding
is a challenge and they are looking for funding sources, partners, grants, etc. Currently 7
skilled handy helpers. Requesting that their budget be doubled to $10k.
ii. Home Preservation Coalition
1. New partners coming on monthly. Using Airtable to coordinate and
communicate. The database is more widely used to track countywide projects
and aggregate information.
2. MOU finished and going to County attorney to help the process work more
efficiently and fluidly.
3. "Open door" applications for assistance can come in through multiple venues.
Online application coming soon.
4. BOCC just approved climate change tax to be used for weatherization (anything
that will improve insulation and protectiveness for a home) for lower-income
homes. The Housing department will manage the funds. $19K to go for LED
lightbulbs.
5. OWASA is working on using funding to help with water weatherization/energy
savings through the Home Preservation Coalition. 70% of those being helped
were older adults or had an older adult in the home.
6. Database provides a comprehensive waitlist and has helped to expedite repairs.
iii. Affordability Housing- Cherie
1. The MAP Housing workgroup is strong with representation from all towns except
Hillsborough. Will be meeting with the Hillsborough mayor to advocate for
representation. All involved appreciate the need for an updated data, especially
data on seniors. Working to gather and update the status of seniors and housing
in OC.
2. Seeing movement in requests for consultation around livable design (i.e. Pee
Wee Homes in Chapel Hill and the new 4-plex Habitat home in Carrboro.
3. Emila Sutton, the new director of Housing & Community Development and Erica
Brant, also in OC Housing and Community Development are joining the MAP
group.
4. We forecast that the need for housing and transportation will intersect in the
near future.
iv. Affordable Housing Coalition — Dick
1. The current focus is on connecting individuals who fall within or below the
Federal Poverty Level with landlords who accept housing vouchers. The Coalition
will create a listing of those willing to take vouchers and share with those in
need. Older adults are the most cost burdened individuals affected by the lack of
affordable housing

12. Dementia Friendly Business Campaign
a. Some businesses are requesting "next level" DFB training. The board recommended directing
people to the Dementia Education Collaborative— Dementia Basics 4-week course for more in-
depth training. Explore online training.
13. Senior Tar Heel Legislature— Dick White
a. Next meeting Mar 17 & 18th when major issues will be put forward for work in the coming
yea rs.
14. Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee—Tiketha Collins
a. Jack Ramsey completed training on March 17. Ongoing quarterly meetings and site visits. The
committee is down 4 members. Carillon Assisted Living of Hillsborough was bought out and is
now Elmcroft of Hillsborough.
15. Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee—Vibeke Talley
a. 3 of 5 NH in OC had rough 2-3 months with complaints that ended up as State level citations
(Peak Resources, Signature in CH, & Carolina Point).
b. Action to take regarding LTC crisis— brainstorm session, include consumers for their perspective
on what can we do to advocate for and improve LTC quality and availability in Orange County.
Compare actual cost vs. corporate profit. What is a reasonable amount of profit? Bring people
together to discuss. Janice to add this item to the next agenda.

Announcement
Cherie announced that Janice Tyler was selected as the UNC Partnership in Aging Program (PiAP) 2020
Visionary. She invited everyone to the PiAP party on March 20, 5:30 pm, UNC Graham Memorial Hall. Janice
was selected for all the work she has done to move the needle in Orange County.

VDP Metrics:
14 active volunteer drivers (5 new this quarter)
134 one way trips (up from 80) ... includes
191 volunteer hours (up from 131)
2637 volunteer miles (up from 1858)
Transportation Helpline — answered an average 75 calls per month
Partner Meetings:

Collaboration with Stakeholders:
CHT — Jeffrey Sullivan, community outreach mngr, held public meetings at Seymour Center to
announce transit changes coming in August. We provided a volunteer translator and note taker and
Spectrum News was on site — segment aired Tuesday 2/4/20
GoTriangle — working with Samone Oates-Bullock with GoTriangle Public Engagement to plan First
Rider events at both Seymour and Passmore this spring/fall as part of GoTriangle's marketing
campaign "Get on Board"
Code the Dream — working with Lori Fernald Khamala with Code the Dream on a $1 OK grant with
STROWD Roses foundation. Lori is asking for the money to create a ride-share app for our
Volunteer Driver Program - submitted 1/30/20
UNC MS OT — 4 students selected OCDOA Transportation for their Community Project in regards to
community mobility and older adults. Students are currently working on a Bus Buddy Program
PiAP — Habitat for Humanity Crescent Magnolia development — student interested in conducting a
"Modes of Transportation" survey
