This veterinarian concurrently serves on the Animal Services Advisory Board (ASAB) by virtue of her or his appointment to the Health Board. Currently, this veterinarian is Lee Picket, V.M.D. Dr. Picket has been an active and productive members of the ASAB since she began her service. She is engaged, conscientious and always willing to take on additional responsibilities. She is well-suited to her current position given her broad interests and her background and training. This includes not only rabies and other zoonotic diseases but shelter operations and medicine. For these reasons the ASAB support the BOCC reappointing Dr. Picket to the ASAB. On this basis, the ASAB is unanimously making the following recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners: • Lori Gershon (position 10: animal welfare or animal advocacy): Ms. Gershon is an attorney with broad experience with animal cruelty in the legal system. Specifically, she has handled cruelty cases both as a Senior Deputy County Attorney and as an Assistant District Attorney. Ms. Gershon attended the July 2020 ASAB meeting. • Allan Polak (position 12: certified animal handler or trainer): Mr. Polak is a certified search and rescue dog handler with extensive experience handling dogs. Currently, he is a member of the Animal Services Hearing Panel Pool. He attended the January ASAB meeting. • Susan Spinks (position 13: owner or manager of retail pet services): Ms. Spinks owns Hearth and Hounds Dog Training, a dog training business based in Chapel Hill. She also manages the Dog Training Program at Paws4/Ever in Mebane. She attended the February ASAB meeting. As either the Chapel Hill or an at-large representative, I would bring enthusiasm and a fresh outlook to the ASAB. I'm on the younger side of the age ranges, and I have a lot of energy--especially for things I am passionate about (i.e., animals).
