PURPOSE: To consider reappointing John Smith, Jr. as Orange County Tax Assessor for a
two year term, effective July 1, 2001.
BACKGROUND: Chapter 105-294 of the North Carolina General Statutes requires the Board
of County Commissioners to appoint a tax assessor for a period of not less than two, nor more
than four, years. John Smith, Jr. was appointed as Orange County Tax Assessor in August
1996 to complete the unexpired term of Kermit Lloyd. He was reappointed for the two year
periods July 1, 1997 -June 30, 1999, and July 1, 1999 -June 30, 2001. Orange County's
practice has been to make appointments to the office of Tax Assessor fortwo-year terms.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board reappoint John Smith, Jr.
as Orange County Tax Assessor for a period of two years, effective July 1, 2001.
