(Staff) Annie Deaver, Shenae McPherson, Cherie Rosemond, Beverly Shuford, Alison Smith, Janice Tyler. Absent and Excused: James Harris, Mary Altpeter Absent: Keith Cook 1. Introductions and Announcements a. Heather Altman presiding i. Heather announced her resignation from Carol Woods Retirement Community to focus on her family and new pursuits. b. Welcome to new Board member Tiketha Collins i. Tiketha shared that she has worked in the aging field for over 20 years, is a Hillsborough resident and a member of the Orange County Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee. 2. Approval of Minutes – November 12, 2019 a. Approved 3. Any other Agenda items a. None Director’s Report 4. Staff updates a. We are in the process of filling the Passmore front desk position. Interviews are finished and an offer will be made soon. b. Shenae (VC 55+) has a new part-time person, Wilma Palmer. She will be filling in the hours for Bobby Cobb (VC 55+ volunteer coordinator) as he is out for health reasons. Wilma is a retired American Red Cross volunteer coordinator and comes with a lot of experience. 5. CIP Kick-off and requests a. Janice has approached Asset Management with a preliminary CIP request for the next improvement on the Passmore Center in year 2026-32. 6. Triangle J Area Agency on Aging Plan 2020-24 – Need your input a. TJCOG-AAA shared the Aging Plan 2020-2024 on-line survey that they are using to gather data about what needs to be included in the plan. The survey is well written and easy to complete. Please take the survey and share with others. 7. Census 2020 Update a. Coming this spring. The Census is electronic and will be a challenge for some older adults. We are working to inform and assist older adults with access to completing the Census. 8. MAP Steering Committee a. The MAP Steering Committee meeting on Jan. 24th at Carol Woods will need to be rescheduled. The date conflicts with the BOCC/Department Head retreat. Janice will let us know the new date when scheduled. Continuing Business 9. Seymour Center Renovation Update a. Janice shared the architect’s storyboard renderings. The roadwork is underway. The building permits are still not in place with Town of Chapel Hill. New Business 10. Annual Report to the BOCC a. Janice shared the Orange County Advisory Boards and Commissions Annual Report/Work Plan for the BOCC with the Advisory Board on Aging members. She asked for input on what they consider to be their most important accomplishments, concerns and emerging issues. Board members were asked to submit their information to her by Friday, Dec. 13. Janice will draft & send the report to the board for review before sending on to the BOCC. Janice thanked the board for all they do. 11. Report on newly created ROAP – Rural Orange Alliance Partnership – Developed out of the (CBPR) Community Based Participatory Research grant from the Detroit Community-Academic Urban Research Center a. Shenae & Annie shared history on the CBPR and reported on ROAP’s objective to bring together Northern Orange African-American communities to make sure their needs are being met. A partnership has been created with the Efland-Cheeks Community Center and the Cedar Grove Community Center to identify key players, bringing them together and creating an initial steering committee. The group received a stipend from grant funds to meet for five sessions to gel and develop initial focus of need. i. The grant has ended and now on the second round of work is underway to build a strong foundation. The governing structure, elected officers and by-laws have been drafted. ii. OCDoA will serve as committee members, not lead. iii. Next challenge: secure grant funding, what are the barriers in community, focus on older adults. iv. Colin suggested ways to keep momentum moving forward: Are ROAP members interested in being on the aging board or map workgroup? Our board could hold a meeting at their location and have them present to us issue related to aging that they feel are not being addressed. Help explore new grant opportunities. v. Jeff suggested recommending to the BOCC that they go to the communities and hold town hall meetings. Continuing Projects 12. Project EngAGE Class Five Graduation – January 9 at 4:30 p.m. Passmore Center a. Wrapping up Class Five this Thursday. Great group, we are excited to see what they are going to do. Graduates will commit to at least one Senior Resource Team. Everyone invited to the graduation. Committee Progress Reports if needed: 13. Dementia Friendly Business Campaign a. Annie Deaver reported that Lisa Meinert is leading the DFB Campaign. Thus far 105 businesses have been trained. Lisa is reaching out to the businesses that are up for their 1-2 yr. retraining or initial training for new employees. She is working with an MBA student to refresh the DFB training video or use the one recently updated by a UNC MPH student. Cherie will share the video with Lisa. 14. Senior Tar Heel Legislature – Dick White a. Dick White attending the March meeting in Chapel Hill where they will address five major issues. Dick asked the Board to consider and submit 5-6 proposals or issues facing older adults in Orange County and submit to him. These should be new and important issues, independent of requiring an increase in budget. Please share issues of concern that should be moved up to the State level by January 3 and he will have it ready for review at our January meeting. i. Janice to add this item to the next agenda and send out the current 5 so Board members do not duplicate and issue, or to see what we feel is a current issue that is not being met. 15. Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee a. Tiketha Collins reported that they have changed their meeting schedule to match the NH Community Advisory Committee schedule. They are in need of new members as many have moved out of the area . 16. Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee a. Vibeke Talley reported that they are starting a new meeting schedule of x4 per year in 2020. The NH CAC is in need of more committee members, if you know of anyone, please let Vibeke know. Criteria: Need minorities, living in Orange County, an interest in older adults and serving. Requirements: attend 4 meetings and complete 8 site visits & reports per year. b. Things are changing at Peak Resources (formerly Brookshire). NH CAC continues to observe all nursing homes, this one in particular due to the changeover. 17. Housing a. Dick White reported that the Housing Coalition is meeting 2nd Friday of every month. Working to identify issues in the County and who is responsible for addressing the issue. Greenfield Commons is a special place; they are having an open house and it is worth visiting. They have a successful approach to affordable housing. b. Cherie Rosemond reported that the community group out of Northside neighborhood created and produced an affordable housing musical. The musical was performed in front of a sold out crowd. Carol Woods has funded a proposal called Peewee Homes to help fund seniors at high risk of homelessness to secure dedicated Peewee housing units. Seeking architect to design. Jenny Womack will serve as a consultant to be sure the building is accessible for all ages and ablilities. Learn more at www.peeweehomes.org. 18. Friends of the Passmore Center - Janice reported that they hosted a trip to Myrtle Beach last week which everyone enjoyed. 19. Friends of the Seymour Center – Janice reported that the reorganization is going well. Adjournment Next meeting: Tuesday, January 14, 2019 1-3 p.m. Seymour Center
