Qualitative Outcomes (success stories )
On Wednesday , August 2 , 2000 , the Orange County Skills Development/Job Link Center
sponsored its second Job Fair . On the Monday and Tuesday before the Job Fair, the
JobLink Center hosted two workshops in an effort to better prepare the job seekers when
they came to the Job Fair . The first workshop was aimed at assisting individuals with
completing applications and preparing professional resumes . The second workshop
entitled "Making the Most of Your Job Fair" and was an informative session that covered
basic topics on how to make the most of the Job Fair experience . The Job Fair was held
in the Center ' s Career Resource Room from 10 : 00 AM — 2 : 00 PM , and it took j ob
seekers , employers , and JobLink staff all working together to make the event a success .
Ten ( 10 ) employers were present that afternoon, and the Center registered over forty ( 40 )
job seekers . A new employer in town, McAllister ' s Deli , promptly returned a follow - up
call to inform JobLink staff that four people were hired as a result of the Job Fair . Based
on the evaluations , job seekers seemed very satisfied with the overall experience . One
suggestion that the Job Fair planning committee will take into consideration for the next
time is to include a wider variety of for profit and not for profit business .
Karen Shelton , an Orange County resident that participated in the Chapel Hill Good
Work ' s "Building Your Business " class and member of the loan circle ( Ladies of the
Future) received her first Gook Work loan for $ 1000 . Karen is the owner of SIZL Art
Gallery and a cancer survivor that has overcome many financial and health issues to now
having a viable business that is now profitable .
Bill and his wife had been making a living in sales for several years . Together they had
been making $ 10 per hour , but were out of work a good bit of the time because of layoffs .
When Bill was laid off last spring we conducted an assessment to help him determine a
field of employment where he could excel . He had always wanted to be a barber ;
JOCCA worked out a training plan and made arrangements for funding for him to attend
the Sanford Barber College . Bill is currently attending school , has not missed any classes
and has received excellent progress reports . He is cutting hair for everyone who will let
him . Bill and his wife have only one car so his wife has been taking him to Sanford on a
daily basis prior to driving to Durham to her job . Bill ' s wife was a former Certified
Nurses Aide but her license expired . She was not happy with her work in a large
department store , but could not afford to give it up and go back to classes . JOCCA
provided her with some old textbooks that had been recycled . With those books and a lot
of studying , she regained her license and obtained a * ob doing private duty nursing for an
elderly gentleman . Bill has very low math skills and has not been able to arrange his
schedule to take classes necessary to enhance his math skills , but he was given some
recycled books and is studying at home . Since his goal is to become self- employed , after
his internship , it is planned that Bill be referred to Good Work to assist him with that
endeavor .

Qualitative Outcomes (success stories ) cont ' d
In an attempt to serve more youth through our services at the JobLink, we brought in a
WIA summer youth employee . Johnnie McCaigue was a pleasant young man trying to
get work to help pay for his educational expenses at the North Carolina A & T
University . Johnnie had completed his first year of study and was having difficulty
obtaining a job for the summer . Johnnie had good computer skills and good people skills
enabling him to assist customers in the Center ' s Resource Room , as well as , giving
assistance to other agencies that needed an extra hand . JOCCA was pleased to be able to
give Johnnie some assistance and we were grateful for the assistance he gave us . Johnnie
is now working and continuing his studies .

E . JobLink Activity Narrative
This quarter, The Durham Technical Community College added a valuable staff resource
to the Orange County Skills Development/JobLink Center by hiring a 1/4 time HRD
instructor for Orange County . Based at the JobLink Center, Dina Logan splits her time
between providing one - on- one assistance in the Career Resource Center as well as
teaching re - employment classes for the Employment Security Commission . Dina Logan
joins us with a rich and vaned Human Resource background and does an excellent job in
relating to our JobLink customers what skills and attitude employers are looking for .
Good Work received a grant to provide its Good Work Building Your Business to all
Carrboro residents and businesses free . There are 14 participants in the class including
four members of the Orange County Disability Awareness Council .
The Orange County Literacy Council has conducted intakes with approximately 15 new
adult literacy students and intakes with approximately 20 new tutors . The Literacy
Council also held an Annual Tutor Social and In service in August for 13 tutors on
"Using Computer Technology to Enhance Literacy Instruction .
The Orange County Literacy Council provided a Diabetes Education Class that met
weekly for six weeks for adults who have diabetes and wanted to learn more about
managing their disease while improving their literacy skills . Three students participated
in that class in August and September for a total of 15 client contracts ; two family
members attended for several sessions to learn more about how they could be more
informed and supportive .
Anmuane McCaig , an Amencorps * VISTA volunteer, has joined the Orange County
Literacy Council through the ` Chapel of The Cross ' Johnson Intern program . She will
replace Paula Borden, the Amencorp * VISTA volunteer, who will leave at the end of
October . Annmane ' s work at the Skills Development Center will focus on helping
tutors and adult learners learn how to use computer software , as well as working with
several adult learners .
Lucy Lewis , Orange County Literacy Council Director , participated in a panel
presentation and panel discussion on Collaborative Relationships between JobLink
Centers and Basic Skills at the Workforce Development Conference in Greensboro .
Five JOCCA staff attended the N . C . Workforce Development Partnership Conference in
September . Two staff attended the Welfare - to Work training in Raleigh , N . C . JOCCA
staff also attended numerous meetings . These meeting included three Child - Support
Court sessions , three JCPC Board meetings , two CASAWORKS meetings , two
Communities That Care meetings , and two Systems of Care meeting . With a grant from
the Workforce Development Board , JOCCA obtained Discover Software and a two -
drawer file cabinet for the Center ' s Resource Room .

A rapid response was conducted for the Flynt Fabric plant in Hillsborough , N . C .
Representatives from the Department of Education and Training , JOCCA , Durham
Technical Community College , and The Employment Security Commission met with
plant management staff in August . Plans were made at that time to go into the plant to
present available services to the other employees . On September 13 , 2000 , the team
presented the services during four individual sessions to approximately 60 employees .
Sessions were held at 7 : 00 AM , 8 : 00 AM , 9 : 00 AM , 10 : 00 AM , and 4 : 00 PM . The
employee population was 40 percent Hispanic . JOCCA provided a translator to relay the
information in Spanish . The employees requested a wide variety of services . As a result
of these meetings , The Durham Technical Community College will set up GED classes in
Hillsborough and enroll some of the other employees in Nurses Aide and other classes .
JOCCA will assess employees in various training activities . The Employment Security
Commission will assist with job search and other activities .
The Skills Development/JobLink Center scheduled specialized workshops during the
month of July . These workshops were held in the Centers Resource Room and were
designed for job seekers that were looking for special help . All sessions were conducted
on Fridays , and included sessions on Using the Internet for Job Search , Creating Your
Resume , and Impressing Employers with Your Interview/Application .
