HomeMy WebLinkAboutOCW minutes 121296 • • Orange Commission for Women Box 8181 • 110 North Churton Street Hillsborough , NC 27278 DECEMBER 12 , 1996 MEETING LINDA CARVER' S HOME 1315 BLACKWOOD MOUNTAIN , CHAPEL HILL MINUTES Present : Winme Morgan, chair; Aimee Tattersall ; Peachee Wicker; Ricka Samulski ; Martha Oxenfeldt ; Karen Bennett ; Abbie Schwaderer Excused : Andrea Lyn, Ronni Zuckerman ; Deborah Van Dyken ; Judy Woodall , Staff Present : Lucy Lewis , director W elcome/Introductions Chair Winme Morgan called the meeting to order at 6 : 40 p . m . New member Karen Bennett was introduced and welcomed , and members introduced themselves . None of the committees have met this month . New chairs need to be selected for the Health and Well-being Committee and Families and Children Committee, due to the resignations of Theresa Sull and Cindy McMahon . The Families and Children Committee has agreed to meet each month prior to the Commission meeting . Abbie Schwaderer reported that , following last month ' s meeting, she contacted the Courthouse regarding child abuse . She learned that approximately 1 /2 of the complaints that are received actually go to court , and of these 1 /4 end up with charges being made . Members discussed a possible recommendation that the courts keep statistics regarding child abuse complaints, cases , and the disposition of these cases . The Women ' s History Month committee will bring a timeline for First Women in Orange County to the January meeting . Membership - Commission and Student Cindy McMahon has resigned due to the difficulties of juggling going back to work and new motherhood . This means that there are two non- Chapel Hill/non-Hillsborough openings and two Hillsborough openings . Two applications were approved for submission to the County Commissioners : Jennifer Tennant and Jacky Philips . Kristen Dunivant was approved for the student position on the Commission . Staff will write the other applicants from Chapel Hill township residents and other students, offering them the opportunity to serve on the committees if they are interested in doing so , and inviting them to reapply in the fall (if they are still students) . Members asked staff to provide everyone a copy of each application under consideration in the future . Hillsborough 732 - 8181 • Chapel Hill 967 - 9251 Mebane 227 - 2031 Durham 68 & 7331 Retreat Planning February 22 and March 1 were suggested as retreat dates . Lucy Lewis needs to check on the date for the Human Relations Commission retreat . Outcomes - review of achievements Discussion was tabled until January . It was suggested that it would be helpful to review a draft of achievements at that time . Director ' s Report Lucy reported on the County Commissioners ' goal- setting retreat . Alice Gordon had asked why recommendations to the BOCC related to the Status Report on Women was not part of next year ' s priority objectives, and Margaret Brown asked if the Commission had ever considered follow-up to an earlier pay equity study done when she was a member of the Commission . Lucy told the Commissioners that recommendations re : the Status Report would be ongoing, and that the Commission would review the pay equity study . Members agreed to ask both Commissioners Gordon and Brown to attend the January meeting to discuss their concerns . The Department on Aging has asked the Commission if it would like to cosponsor a bi - monthly breakfast meeting with elected officials ; members agreed to the cosponsorship and staff will find out more about what that entails . Lucy met recently with Gwen Price from Social Services ; Gwen reports that the new regulations will mean that a person receiving public assistance will have 4 weeks to find a job , or else they will have to do at least 30 hours of unpaid community service to continue receiving benefits . The Commission may want to provide greater community awareness of what changes in welfare will mean, conduct some kind of study of the impact of these changes , or make recommendations to the County Commissioners .
