MINUTES
Present : Winnie Morgan, chair; Aimee Tattersall ; Ricka Samulski ; Karen Bennett ; Deborah Van Dyken ;
Ronni Zuckerman; Abbie Schwaderer
Excused : Peachee Wicker; Linda Carver; Martha Oxenfeldt
Guests Present : Commissioner William Crowther; Jacky Philips ; Jennifer Tennant (prospective Commission
members)

W elcome/Introductions
Chair Winnie Morgan called the meeting to order at 7 : 35 p . m . and asked members and guests to introduce
themselves to Commissioner Crowther . Then Commissioner Crowther introduced himself to the group .
Commissioner Crowther Comments
Commissioner Crowther thanked the Commission for Women for their dedicated service . He suggested
that the Commission should look at the action steps in the report Sustainable America and agreed to provide
staff with a copy, and suggested that the Commission might want to work with the Economic Development
Commission on issues of economic equality for women . He then indicated that one of the Commissioners '
goals for this year is to look at boards and commissions , with one possible outcome being one board per
ill study this issue, and will then ask boards for their input before
department . He indicated that the staff w
any final decisions are made . He said that recommendations are likely by fall 1997 . Members expressed
their concern that boards and commissions have an opportunity to have input into the staff proceedings . He
encouraged members to communicate with the Commissioners regarding small issues (by letter) and large
issues as well (in person or by mail ) , and then left the meeting .
A committee of Winnie Morgan, Judy Woodall , Jennifer Tennant , and Kristen Dunnivant agreed to draft a
position paper regarding the Commission for Women that could be included as part of the board and
commission study process, so that the Commission is proactively sharing information rather than reacting to
recommendations .
Membership ; Vice- Chair
Andrea Lynn has resigned due to the pressures of a new community and new job . Members voted to
contact Leticia Lumpkin , an applicant for the Chapel Hill township position , to see if she was still interested .
Because Andrea was vice - chair, Winnie will be talking with Commission members regarding filling the vice -
chair position . Winnie said that Kay Singer will be applying for one of the Hillsborough township positions

and that members can vote on her application in February . Mary Price was suggested as a possible applicant
for the other Hillsborough opening . Staff will provide an updated membership list to all members .
Achievements and Outcomes
Lucy Lewis explained that a new approach and format for the annual budget and reporting of objectives ,
outcomes , and measures had been distributed at the previous day ' s department head meeting . She will have
to revise the document for discussion at February ' s meeting .
Committee Meetings
Members and prospective members divided into one of three committees - Advocacy, Families and Children,
and Women ' s Health and Well-being to discuss their next steps . Each group then reported back to the large
group .
Women ' s Health and Well - being
Deborah Van Dyken reported that the committee ' s next project would be a Family Law series . Local
attorneys will be asked to present on topics including custody - and child support ; divorce and visitation ;
alimony and equitable distribution ; domestic violence and child abuse ; adoption , grandparents rights and
termination of parental rights . The format will consist of a 40 minute presentation, followed by time for
questions and answers . Other issues for future consideration by the committee include equitable funding of
high school sports , child abuse concerns and monitoring judges ' records regarding decisions in those cases .
The committee will meet on February 13 at 6pm at Bandidos Restaurant in Hillsborough , preceding the
Commission meeting .
Advocacy
This committee will focus on reporting on and getting feedback regarding the status report on Orange
County women at township meetings . The committee will meet again on Wednesday, January 29 at 6pm at.
the Commission for Women offices at 110 S . Churton Street in Hillsborough . Staff will make reminder
calls .
Women and Children
This committee will meet on February 13 at 6pm at the Saratoga Grill in Hillsborough preceding the
Commission meeting .
Women ' s History Month Committee
Lucy reported that Peachee Wicker is working on researching first women , and if she is able to identify a
sufficient number, she will work with Linda Carver on a Women ' s History Month reception in March .
Retreat
Members agreed to hold the annual retreat on Saturday, April 12 from 10am- 3pm .

• One of the MLK, Jr . Birthday observances will be held on Monday, January 20 at 7 : 30 pm at Lee ' s
Chapel in Cedar Grove
• NC Equity will be holding its annual statewide Agenda Assembly on Saturday, February 1 . For more
