HomeMy WebLinkAboutArts Commission minutes 090919 ORANGE COUNTY ARTS COMMISSION September 9, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. Chapel Hill Public Library Chapel Hill, NC Board Members present: Fred Joiner, Chair;Delia Keefe, Secretary; Tinka Jordy, Vice Chair; Dan Mayer, Linda Williamson, Marcela Slade, Ashley Nissler, Anita Mills, Bronwyn Merritt, Marlon Torres, Rachael Despard, Doris Friend, Chris Kubica, Justin Haslett Board Members absent: Tim Hoke Staff Present.• Katie Murray, Executive Director I. Fred called the meeting to order at 6:34 p.m. II. Doris moved, Ashley seconded to approve the August, 2019 minutes with the following addition. Three board members (Marlon, Marcella, and Justin)were asked not to attend the meeting because of the status of their grant applications. The motion was approved. III. Advisory Board Update: a. Appointments for Linda, Justin, and Doris will go before the commissioners for renewal. IV. Executive Committee Report a. The committee agreed to wait until our nonprofit status is established before trying to move ahead with partnerships. b. Our dinner for the arts leaders to explain our goals will be scheduled for October or November if possible. c. Plans for our next meeting include defining the roles of the two organizations and discussing our bylaws. V. Director's Report: a. There is no word yet from the state on arts grants. b. More reviewers are needed for the Arts Education Grants. The deadline is extended to the end of September. d. Eno Mill—the goal is to involve several partners. A 5-year plan for phases 1 (studio space) and 2 (class/open space) has been submitted. Phase 3 (performing/maker/retail)will be planned using ArtSpace MN as a model. e. Art on the Hill will be a partnership between Carrboro, Tourism, and UNC. Katie will meet with Hillsborough partners this week. f. Katie proposed the idea of the commission creating a year round Children's Theater program. g. Katie proposed changing Local Fest to Local Roots Festival with more of an emphasis on the arts. h. The Plein Air reception at C3 will be held on 9/27/19 V. Liaison Reports: a. UNC Student Liaison Update—CPA has kicked off its season with Misty Copeland and is trying to diversify its programming. Many guest artist residencies are scheduled. Yep Roc is trying to expand community outreach. b. UNC/Chapel Hill Arts Commission—The Elliott Rd. area is being prepared for the installation of public art. Festifall is being reviewed. Playmakers is beginning its fall season. c. Hillsborough Arts Council—The council is holding elections for new and returning members. Volunteer for the Riverpark Concert on their website if you can. This is a fundraiser for the council. d. The Arts Center—Fall programs are ongoing including the after school program, artist residencies, and gallery exhibits. e. Carrboro Arts Committee—Marcella Slade has been selected as their new curator. f. Orange County Artists Guild—The guild is involved in ongoing planning for the tour this fall. VI. Advocacy Updates: a. The importance of having a solid financial policy was discussed. Doris made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Marcella seconded. Fred adjourned the meeting.
