Attendees Max Mason, Chair Jack Vogt, Vice Chair Deborah Stewart, Secretary James Bartow, Member Beverly Foster, Member Suzanne Haff, Member Dan Hatley, Member Debbie Rider, Member Joyce Teston, Member Mary Fraser, Department on Aging Liaison Charlotte Terwilliger, Ombudsman The following committee member provided advance notice to Max Mason, Chair, that they would miss the meeting; therefore her absence is considered excused: Yvonne Mendenhall Minutes July 17, 2015 Minutes approved. Report from the Ombudsman, Charlotte Terwilliger • Jack, Suzanne and Debbie helped with dementia training at Meadowmont and thought it was successful; some were especially impacted by the activity highlighting sensation differences. Expressed the thought that those who attended really benefited and will take some of those lessons with them to work. Since the experience could leave one feeling overwhelmed, it was suggested that feedback or discussion afterward may have been helpful. Members were encouraged to mention the virtual dementia tour at the facilities that we visit. Charlotte could send us link to the ABC story and then would coordinate with staff that is interested; it would take 8-15 mins per person. • Reminder about Lisa Levine’s presentation “Engaging Residents with Dementia” on October 21, 2015 at Triangle J Council of Governments. It is a 2 ½ hour training and she will also address resident bullying. • Alzheimer’s Reading Room that Charlotte shared with us was recommended by committee member as a beneficial resource. • Charlotte visited new administrator at Crescent Green but the administrator will not stay on in that role. There is a role called “Administrator of the Day”. Committee continues to try to understand the roles within the management structure. • Triangle J has new Executive Director, Lee Worsley and the Aging Department Head, Joan Pellettier is retiring. Triangle J will be pulling together regional emergency providers and LTC providers for more effective disaster responsiveness training. • Official business cards printed from the County and distributed to committee members. We may request larger font next time. Notify Charlotte if more are needed. • CAC Leadership Committee Meeting, Sept 30th. RSVP by 23rd. Members were encouraged to attend as it will provide good networking opportunity and time to hear and understand what other counties are doing. Report from the Department on Aging, Mary Fraser • September 1, 2015 – Six Long Term Care Quality Service Awards were awarded based on implementation of Music and Memory Program. Recipients were: o Carol Woods – is now using the program in Assisted Living and Nursing Home areas; o Livewell is starting to incorporate information about music preferences at intake; o Florence Gray Soltys Adult Day Program; o Right at Home and A Helping Hand are working with clients who are at home; o Brookshire is using this even at end of life, not just with dementia residents • Next award will be based on palliative and end-of-life issues and will focus on the facilities that are providing comfort, not just bringing in palliative and hospice care providers. For eligibility, a facility would develop a comfort care program, show it in action, then apply for award. Training October 28 for administrators to learn about it and how to implement. o Suggestion: For the SHARP (Senior Health Advocacy and Resource Partners of Orange County) Award and Long Term Care Quality Service Award programs, maybe there could be one focused on a facility that primarily accepts public funding to provide incentive and motivation for staff to participate. Mary noted that there has been extreme difficulty to starting new programs in some facilities since they have to regularly address crises and may not have staff to spare; if they participate, that will be a great start. Several facilities have shown initiative and excitement but their efforts are inhibited. Free training and consultation available. • Livewell is expanding their property. • Department on Aging was awarded Caregiver Support grant for $900K that came through Alzheimer’s support initiative. New services will roll out in approx. 3 months: (1) Individual level – in-home support to caregivers from MSW and OT to focus on rediscovering competencies and addressing behavioral concerns. Also to expand respite program to Hillsborough; (2) Organizational level – train individuals and workers in facilities; (3) Community level – goal is to become a “Dementia-Friendly Community” which involves developing a training program that will allow businesses and retailers to show that they commit to accommodating clients with dementia. County offices will also go through this training. Only 11 grants were awarded in the country! • Aging in Place Series: presentation tonight at 7:00pm at Seymour Senior Center on reimaging one’s community. Presenter, is Bolton Anthony, editor of “Reimagining your neighborhood.” Community Relations/Patient Advocacy & Education issues, Joyce Teston • Confirmed table at Duke Monday Dec 14th at Wash Duke display set up by 10am. Program 11-1. One person from each table will be able to attend program and luncheon. Deadline to present the name of that attendee is Oct 9. Charlotte will send out email so we can coordinate schedules. Joyce is incoming president of that orgnaization so she cannot be our representative. • Clarification/discussion: What is our role? - education or recruitment? • Application pool is limited. • Not a lot of response from civic groups. • Do any facilities have Family day? Brookdale, Stratford may and we could use that as an opportunity to educate families about our existence and role. • Newspaper article will serve to both recruit and educate. Deadline is Sept 30th for print in the Senior Times. • New volunteer coordinator Yvette Missri; we will invite her to this committee mtg; she was in charge of Project Engage. She may be able to help match volunteers with CAC positions. Beverly Shuford, in Communications, sends out press releases and creates flyers. We could incorporate her skills. Max will send her what we have used in the past. • Britthaven of Chapel Hill has been sold to Liberty Healthcare, and will probably open up part of the building and long-term plan may be to relocate within Orange County. Visitation Reports • Important to visit Carillon and Villines since 2nd quarter was overlooked. o Carol Woods 8/13/15 – approved o Brookdale Meadowmont 8/13/15 – approved o Prior reports by Talita are being addressed. • It was noted that no 2015 reports seemed to be visible online. Charlotte Terwilliger will review. It is important to keep information current. Housekeeping and New Business • Dan and Jack Vogt are both up for reappointment. Both expressed interest and Charlotte Terwilliger will put their names forward. • Committee member Yvonne Mendenhall is attending Aging meetings. • Committee members were invited to attend CAC Leadership Training on Sept 15 • Max extended invitation to Paul Klever to attend a committee meeting but he has been unable to respond.
