Meeting Minutes – July 16, 2015

Meeting called to order at 3:32 pm at the Central Orange Senior Center in Hillsborough, NC

The following committee members provided advance notice to Max Mason, Chair, that they
would miss the meeting; therefore their absences are considered excused: James Bartow, Dan
Hatley, and Debbie Rider.
Talita Crews has resigned her position on the board.

Minutes approved.
Report from the Ombudsman, Charlotte Terwilliger
• Noted that Quarterly Activity Forms can be accepted via email.
• Suggested that Lisa Levine’s dementia training on October 21st at Triangle J from 1:00
pm - 3:30 pm may benefit us as we engage residents with dementia during our visits.
Charlotte will send out reminders.
• Reminder to complete CAC survey.
• There will be a meeting of those that staff Advisory Committees to review policies of
advisory boards. Those materials will be reviewed by Max and Jack. When there is a
vacancy, filling it is important and attendance to meetings is important. Clarification that
when a member is appointed, that member is appointed to a position and it depends on
how many year are on that position that dictates how many years one can serve. Charlotte
will send email to us for review.
• Donna Baker indicated that she would support business cards with County Seal for
committee members. This committee recommends 50-100 per member.
• Nursing Home CAC is thinking about reading book “Being Mortal” by Atul Gawande
and having a discussion. Is this something we would consider as individuals or as a
committee?
Report from the Department on Aging, Mary Fraser
• Long-term Care Living Collaborative has been working on a quality service awards
program around activities and exercise. This year’s focus will be on Music & Memory.
Application process ends August 1st. Assisted Living facilities, Skilled Nursing facilities,
Homecare agencies, and Adult Day Programs are eligible. Next year will focus on
palliative care and they will be looking for people who can provide training around this.
• There are a number of initiatives related to the Orange County Master Aging Plan. Dept.
on Aging recently completed the 3rd year of a 5-yr cycle and they will review their
accomplishments at a meeting next Thursday 8:30-10:30 at Carol Woods. We are invited
to attend. Carol Woods will provide breakfast.
• Orange County website will help families compare costs and ratings of LTC options,
hopefully by the end of August.
Community Relations/Patient Advocacy & Education issues, Joyce Teston
• We will not be able to have a table at Hillsborough Hog Day.
• Other community organizations may be confused about who we are and what we do so
they haven’t expressed interest yet. Educating the public is one of our ongoing goals.
• Max and Dan found an article that was previously published and Max will email it to us
for review and comment. What is our objective? Recruiting or education?
• We have until October to add an article or ad to the Senior Times.
• Max will ask that Paul Clever of the Charles House to come and discuss some of the
different models for long term care.
Visitation Reports
The Stratford (6/24/15) – approved
Crescent Green (6/24/15) – recommend that Charlotte and Mary and one of the
committee members deliver this report to the owner/administrator, Yolanda, since she
was not present
Cedar Grove (5/27/15) – approved with minor edits
Carol Woods (5/28/15) – approved
Brookdale Meadowmont (formerly Carolina House) (5/28/15) - approved
Recommendation that the committee highlight, enhance and encourage when positives are
noted. This proposal was endorsed and supported. Since our goal is to improve things for
residents, it is important for us to understand that the administrators and staff at these
facilities are dealing with their own challenges so that we can better understand how
effective change can occur.
Wrap up and new business
• Joyce Teston will not be able to serve on the Aging Advisory Committee so the
Committee supported the nomination of Yvonne Mendenhall. The Aging Advisory
Committee is an action committee and they like to have representatives from NH CAC
and ACH CACs.
• Max passed out, for our information and education, packets of License Renewal
applications and a table displaying historical occupancy rates, special populations served,
and payer sources for the Adult Care Homes in our community.
Next Meeting: Thurs. September 17, 2015 from 3:30pm – 5:00pm at Central Orange Sr. Ctr.
