Report from the Department on Aging, Mary Fraser • Direct Care Worker Awards ceremony was on May 6, 2015 at The Seymour Center. A high priority will be placed on increasing awareness about this award to our facilities for next year’s event. • This committee has recommended that more info about long-term care resources be available and easily accessible to those searching for information. Mary noted that they have an intern who will work on their webpage devoted to long-term care and the plan is to include names, pictures, ratings, checklists, how to manage care and advocate for pt rights. It was suggested that it also connect to any reports from DSS placement specialists. • The volunteer program called RSVP has been cancelled and a new program called Volunteer Connect 55+ will replace it. They will also collect data on our committee’s volunteer efforts. Community Relations/Patient Advocacy & Education issues, Joyce Teston • Update on the Duke Retirees Association meeting. The next one is slated for December 14. If we want to participate, we could set up a table and would need 2 volunteers. Speakers also have not yet been selected. • Hillsborough’s annual Hog Day celebration may be another opportunity to educate the community. • Hillsborough Kiwanis Club is looking for speakers as well • Suggested that we could run an advertisement or article in the Orange News, Chapel Hill News and/or Senior Times. It was noted that Resident Rights month is in October so that maybe a good time to pursue this. This committee had run an article in the Senior Times a couple years ago so that may be a good place to start. Max and Dan will look for that article so we can review that together. • Other suggestions: Letter to the Editor, invite reporter to our committee meeting Visitation Reports Charles House/Yorktown - approved Charles House/Winmore - approved Livewell - approved Carillon – recommend edits/clarification; will table until the next meeting Villines – approved with edits • Max will ask that Paul Clever come to our committee to discuss the Charles House’s family care home model. • Reviewed team assignments and noted that Cedar Grove FCH to be visited before end of May if possible. Housekeeping and New Business • Encouraged members of this committee to apply to the Aging Advisory Committee which is held on the 2nd Tuesdays from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm and alternates location between the two senior centers. Member would have to apply through the county website. Committee supports Joyce Teston’s nomination. • EMS Falls Prevention Advisory Committee reviews ways to reduce falls since many calls are made to EMS about falls, even in ALFs. May Fraser is unsure about the meeting schedule but if members are interested, reach out to Mary to discuss further. • Chatham Ridge Assisted Living in Chatham County just opened. It’s not one of our facilities but it 90 beds + memory care. They say they will accept special assistance. Their location is close to Orange County so it may impact the Orange County facilities • Max distributed chart of visitation schedules. • Questions were raised about the cost of ACH and FCH, eligibility for Special Assistance, and comparing the services available to residents. Clarification and education about the funding streams and differences in levels of care may be helpful for committee members.
