HomeMy WebLinkAboutPFAP Steering Committee Notes 102411Minutes of the 10-24-2011 meeting at the Piedmont Food and Agriculture Processing Center In attendance: Pam Kerriker, Noah Ranells, Delphine Sellares, Mathew Royball, Judy Compton, Barry Jacobs and Carl Matyac CM: Volunteered to take minutes NR: Read minutes from last meeting CM and PK: Many positive comments about the grand opening, vendors present were very enthusiastic and cited the PFAP is an outstanding opportunity for their business. JC and DS: Great to see elected officials, reduction in carbon footprint, increased utilization of local grown food and tours for children at the facility. MR: Little School in Hillsborough to tour and possibly use for food prep 10-15 max per tour, also surprised at turn-out for grand opening approx. 200 in attendance. NR: Funders were happy, suggested an annual open house event BJ: Noted ChapelBorough.com coverage, web page should be linked to Cooperative Extension in Orange Co. and and CE pages in Alamance, Chatham and Durham. Question about 501c3 timeline. MR: items on punch list included issues around electrical, mechanical, plumbing and general contractor Bottle filler and veg washer to be installed. Veg washer has the option for 2 or 3 sorting lines Juicer: Chatham Cider Works to aid in installation, additional pieces of equipment to be sponsored such as blast chiller and blast freezer by Luna Pops. A mixer and a rotational oven to be installed. DS: How will equipment be repaired? MR: All equipment has a 1 to 3 year warranty. Tech service and repair is all very expensive. Most pieces of restaurant equipment has a 10 yr expected life. There does need to be a budget line item to cover service and maintenance contracts. BJ: Suggested the creation of an intranet web site to be developed to aid in communication. MR: Client Update: anchor clients all have a min/max clause in their contract to control number of hours used at the facility. 45 approved client applications 24 initial consultation, 10 more in October 14 have gone through orientation Minutes of the 10-24-2011 meeting at the Piedmont Food and Agriculture Processing Center Page 2 Letter of inspection have arrived from NCDA and OC Health Department Use of the facility is exceeding original expectation MR: An Operational Manual will be developed which will include Good Maintenance Practices (GMPs), Standard Operational Procedures (SOP) and general information for PFAP USDA Meat and Poultry Review: anything over 2% meat is considered a meat product. One Minor Use Permits per location are granted. PFAP can apply for the permit or a business using the site may apply for the permit. Management has to be on site while food under the permit is being produced. Many clients are asking about meat processing at the facility. Additional permitting will be additional cost to Orange County. This would have to go through Asset Management Services for approval. Other meat products being considered are sausage and oven dried jerky. BJ: More questions about 501c3 status. Plan to ask John Roberts for a presentation on the pros and cons of 501c3. MR: Plan to meet quarterly after the Nov 28 and Jan meeting. BJ: Meeting adjourned.
