HomeMy WebLinkAboutEcon Dev Advisory Board minutes 011413 ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ADVISORY BOARD January 14, 2013 Piedmont Food and Agriculture Processing Center Hillsborough, NC MINUTES Present: Delores Bailey, Jim Kitchen, Karen McAdams, Mark O’Neal, Mark Sherburne, Nicholas Thomas, and Tom Underwood Orange County Staff: Steve Brantley, Dottie Schmitt, and Yvonne Scarlett Absent: D.R. Bryan, Lori Eichel, Eric Pate Call to Order Delores Bailey, Vice Chair called the meeting to order at 8:17 a.m. Approval of Minutes – November 12, 2012 Minutes were approved unanimously. New Business Steve Brantley (Economic Development Director) asked the Advisory Board members to help formulate an economic development vision and areas of focus for 2013. It was determined that ED staff Yvonne Scarlett will forward a copy of the “work plan” submitted to the Board of County Commissioners, as well as sales tax allocation pie chart and graph to the Advisory Board. After review of work plan, each member will specifically choose an area of interest and then meet (in person, via email and/or Google dot) as sub-committee to address issues (suggested sub-committees could report progress at the next Advisory Board meeting in March) Additional discussion included:  Definition of economic development  Work plan presented to BOCC  Quarter cents sales tax and allocation  February 1st County Commissioner retreat  Business recruitment/retention  Diversifying the tax base  Retail tax base  Meeting schedule (to complete vision) Director’s Report - Steve Brantley Brantley briefly updated project(s) status. Additional updates included website award (2012 Silver W3 Award); interns (2 Duke students from Korea will intern in ED office until May) and Agricultural Summit (February 11, 2013 at Schley Grange Hall in Hillsborough). Adjournment Meeting was adjourned at 9:25 (followed with tour of Piedmont Food and Agriculture Processing Center).
