SUBJECT: Monthly Meeting Summary

Rob Golan, Bob Ireland, Joanna Lelekacs

I. Call to Order: Chair Dickinson called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm.
II. Additions or Changes to Agenda – Rankin asked to add an item about the Colonial Inn
(Hillsborough) to the agenda. HPC members agreed to add under the Discussion Items.
III. Approval of Minutes – Golan identified one typo in the draft minutes. Gilfillen motioned
to accept the May 25 minutes as amended. Golan seconded motion; it was approved.
IV. Reports
a. Local Landmark Application – John S. Pope Farm: Shaw reported he notified the
applicant of the HPC’s decision that the property was a good candidate for Orange
County Local Landmark consideration and to proceed with completing Part 2 of the
application. The HPC will plan to consider the application at its August 22 meeting.
b. Last Fridays Exhibit – Dickinson provided overview of HPC exhibit at May 25 Last
Fridays in Hillsborough. Other members remarked on their favorable experience.
V. Items for Decision - None
VI. Discussion Items
a. Historic Preservation Summit – HPC discussed issues raised by groups at the May 3
summit. Ireland presented proposal for developing joint website to serve as interim
(virtual) heritage center. HPC agreed to send follow-up memo to summit participants.
b. Wayfaring Sign at the County Justice Facility – HPC discussed Commissioner
Pelissier’s letter to Mayor Stevens recommending that County and Town staff
develop a joint resolution and maps to identify/protect significant cultural sites on
public property in Hillsborough. Shaw to meet with M. Hauth in July to initiate effort.
c. Courthouse Square tree trimming and landscaping – HPC discussed recent tree
trimming and proposal to remove willow oaks in front of the old courthouse.
d. Colonial Inn update – Rankin reported on recent activities concerning the structure
e. Historic Resource evaluation exercise – Tabled until August meeting.
f. 2012 Work Plan – Tabled until August meeting.
VII. Information Items
a. A Sense of Place Photography Contest – HPC discussed briefly its involvement with
this joint contest with the Orange County Museum.
b. Stewart Dunaway research – HPC discussed this new research on Hillsborough
town lots and agreed to ask Mr. Dunaway to present at future HPC meeting.
VIII. The meeting was adjourned at 9:25 pm.
